The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Monday, August 29, 2022, at 9:00AM. They are expected to enter immediately into Executive Session to discuss the appointment or employment or evaluation of a public officer or employee. Invited into the executive session are Interim Town Manager Patrick Moreland, HR Director Sally Nix and Ellis Hankins.
All Town offices within the Brattleboro Municipal Center will be closed on Friday, August 26, 2022 from 11:00am to 2:00pm for a staff event.
The Brattleboro Board of Listers will met on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 9:30am in Suite 109 at the Brattleboro Municipal Center (230 Main Street).

Arbor Climb will be pruning trees on Main Street beginning on Monday, August 29. The work is scheduled to take place between 6:00am – 8:30am on Monday, Tuesday, August 30 and Wednesday, August 31.
During this work there will be no parking on Main Street during these hours.
The Brattleboro Planning Commission has been actively working to understand the housing needs of our community and promote housing infill in the centers of Brattleboro and West Brattleboro. The Town received a Bylaw Modernization Grant from the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development to support that ongoing work.
The Planning Commission will be hosting two community walks to explore the form and density of housing in several neighborhoods. We will be discussing the size and shapes of lots, the distance between buildings, where buildings are placed on lots, the types of residential buildings and number of units in a building. The goal is to learn about the form, character and density of neighborhoods to improve our understanding of the opportunities for and constraints on providing more places for people to live in our community. The Brattleboro Selectboard doesn’t want to review what led to an abrupt change in EMS services in town last spring.
As much as some citizens would like to know, the board resists. No lookin’ back. No way. Don’t want to even think about it.
The next animal control officer will serve 40 hours a week, a fancy new B&B got a liquor license, the Town will work on plans for permanent downtown public restrooms, and the board expressed gratitude for the monthly EMS update and all the fine work being done.
The Town of Brattleboro is embarking on a new plan that will collaboratively develop recommended improvements to its bicycle and pedestrian facilities. The Walk/Bike Action Plan will draw on recent studies, including the 2018 Downtown Plan, Route 30 Multi-Modal Gateway Plan, Route 9 Continuous Bicycle Facility Feasibility Plan, and the Brattleboro Town Plan. It will weave together the pertinent recommendations from previous studies with local projects currently under construction or planned, and provide other solutions that will further connect the town’s evolving network of sidewalks, bike facilities, and shared-use paths.

Per the request of the Brattleboro Selectboard, I am to provide a monthly EMS update relative to the operations and any pertinent data collected. The last update was provided on July 19, 2022. This update is representative of that date till the date written on August 9, 2022.
Since July 1, 2022, the Brattleboro Fire Department (BFD) has responded to 313 EMS calls and 132 fire- related emergencies. On August 2, 2022, the BFD answered an astonishing 28 calls for service. 21 of those emergencies were EMS calls and 2 of the 28 were working fires in the Town of Hinsdale NH. To this date, no mutual aid has been requested into the Town of Brattleboro by the BFD.
The next August meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard will bring discussions of public restrooms, an EMS update, a request to have the Animal Control Officer work 40 hours a week, and more. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during public participation.

On Friday, August 12, the west side of the High Grove Parking Lot will be closed while Nichols Tree Care works to remove overgrowth from the top of the retaining wall.
The permit parking area is anticipated to be open and available by 10:00 am but the other spaces will be closed longer. Vehicles with valid permits for the High Grove lot may park elsewhere in the lot as long as the valid permit is displayed.
The first installment of the 2022 Brattleboro Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes will be due on August 15, 2022. Payments made after August 15, 2022 will have an additional 1% interest added to the unpaid balance.
The Town of Brattleboro utility bills are also due on August 15, 2022. Payments made after August 15, 2022 will have an additional 1% interest, as well as an 8% penalty added to the unpaid balance.

The Town of Brattleboro urges everyone to drink plenty of water, wear light clothing and stay out of the heat as much as possible during this current heat wave.
People who need some cool air can visit the Brooks Memorial Library (224 Main Street) or the Central Fire Station (103 Elliot Street).
The Brattleboro Selectboard continued their careful consideration of abortion rights. They heard testimony about the possible town resolution from the Town Lawyer and a State Representative in addition to members of the public. In the end it was decided to do nothing, the safest option for now.
Brattleboro will be getting energy saving incentives and rebates as part of a special program with Efficiency Vermont. They especially want to hear from renters!
Please be advised. Property owners are responsible for trimming and maintaining vegetation on their property if it may interfere with the public right of way. Overgrown vegetation creates an unsafe situation for pedestrians who may have to walk in the roadway to get by. It also impacts the sight distance for vehicular traffic.
