Shocked: We Are (Not) The Only Brattleboro

I was doing some research for the book I am writing about novelist and newspaper man, T. P. James, who lived in Brattleboro in the 1870s, before moving onward. In  the course of my research, I stumbled on this listing of a newspaper called the Headlight in Brattleboro in 1886.

I was very curious to see the county listed for Brattleboro, as Edgecombe County. Then I noticed that I was in the North Carolina portion of the newspaper directory.

Expect Weekend Traffic Delays on I-91 in Brattleboro Area

The traveling public is advised to expect traffic delays on I-91 northbound between Exits 2 and 3 in the Brattleboro area. These delays are likely to occur during periods of high traffic volume. Expect delays on I-91 Northbound on Friday afternoon and evening, and on I-91 Southbound on Sunday afternoon. Special consideration should be given to the start and end of Holidays as well.

Brattleboro Labor Day Closures

Monday, September 1, 2014, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday, August 31, and Monday, September 1. All other violations, including extended parking, will be enforced.

Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Sunday, August 31, and Monday, September 1.


Brattleboro Police Chief Search Evaluation Committee Meeting

The Brattleboro Police Chief Search Evaluation Committee will meet on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 8:00am in the Town Manager’s office at the Municipal Center. It is anticipated that the Committee will enter into executive session at 8:00am to discuss the appointment or employment or evaluation of a public officer or employee.

Brattleboro Friday Pave Update

August 22, 2014

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

Paving on Western Avenue was cancelled for Friday night due to wet roads, drizzle and the possibility of heavier rain. Crews return Saturday night 8/23 starting at 7 pm.

Resurfacing on remaining town streets of Birge, Chapin, Grove, and Guilford has been rescheduled to Wednesday, August 27. This is due to the past two days of rain and the Tuesday elections in Brattleboro held off Grove Street.

Paving Update

August 21, 2014

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

Due to today’s rain paving on remaining streets, Birge, Chapin, Grove and Guilford Streets have been postponed until Monday, August 25. The work may go into Tuesday.

Milling and paving on Western Avenue is planned for Friday night with a rain date of Saturday night. Work begins after 6 pm with delays expected.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes -August 19, 2014

Emergency response capabilities for tragic events at schools will be the primary topic of discussion for the Brattleboro Selectboard at their next Tuesday meeting at the Municipal Center. The board will hear how Brattleboro’s response plan is “unlike any other in the state.”

In addition to the school response plan, the board will learn more about our general response plan for disasters and emergencies, will conduct staffing level reviews triggered by resignations of a dispatcher for the police department and an account clerk at the library, and will discuss forming a regional economic hub issue committee.

Notice of Democratic Town Caucus to Elect Nominees to Serve as Justice of the Peace

Notice is hereby given that the Democratic Town Committee of Brattleboro will hold a caucus for the purpose of electing nominees to stand for election as justice of the peace on the 2014 general election ballot.

The meeting will be held at Brattleboro Savings & Loan (in the community room around behind the building) on August 19, 2014 at 7:30 p.m.  If no one is at the door, there is a doorbell which will alert someone to let you in.  (This is especially important if you’re a couple of minutes late, or as we Democrats say, “on time.”)

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

Milling of three streets was completed on Thursday and clean up around structures and along curb lines is taking place as planned on Friday. Resurfacing has been pushed back to Wednesday and Thursday, August 20-21. The tentative schedule has Lane Construction starting on Cotton Mill Hill, followed by Fairground Road and Birge Street. The second day would be Chapin, Grove Street and finally on Guilford Street. This can change with rainy weather between now and then.
