Wendy Harrison of Brattleboro has announced that she is a candidate for one of the two soontobevacant Windham County State Senator seats. She is running as a Democrat in the August 9 primary.

Harrison has 30+ years of local government experience and a passion for working together with everyone in the community to address challenges and seize opportunities.

“We can solve our problems from the ground up, as long as the process is inclusive,” Harrison said. “I am committed to identifying barriers and developing solutions that empower individuals. This benefits us all.

Wendy invites everyone to come out for her campaign launch meetandgreet event on Tuesday, May 10, from 46pm, at the Brattleboro Common. People also can learn more about Wendy and her reasons for running at www.wendy4windhamvt.org.

People all across Windham County and beyond are speaking out in support of Harrison’s campaign, including the following:

“Other people will tell you about Wendy’s accomplishments in public service. But, what will make Wendy a great public servant working for the people of Windham County and the State of Vermont is that Wendy asks questions and she listens.”

Deborah Lee Luskin,
Newfane

[As Municipal Manager in Rockingham and Bellows Falls,] Wendy treated the public with respect, communicated proactively and responded efficiently to requests. She did an enviable job of addressing the frequently divergent interests of the Town and Village.

Rick Cowan,
Rockingham

“Honest, dependable, smart, dedicated, passionate, and compassionate. These are words I use to describe Wendy Harrison. She actively listens and is always open to new ideas and beliefs. She is not afraid to tackle the most challenging situations and does so with patience, commitment, and civility. I trust her as a leader and am proud to call her not only my professional colleague but my personal friend.”

Katie Buckley,
Former Commissioner of Housing & Community Development for the State of Vermont

“I worked with Wendy on the Windham Regional Commission and on the Board of Southeast Vermont Transit. She’s an effective collaborator and a tireless advocate for bus riders.”

Joel Bluming,
Jamaica

In addition to emphasizing her broad and enduring commitment to inclusive processes, Harrison named housing, sustainable transportation, childcare and parental leave, and equitable economic development as major issues that she is eager to work on as a State Senator from Windham County.

In Vermont, Harrison has served as the Municipal Manager for Bellows Falls/Rockingham, the Interim Town Administrator for Vernon, and the Interim City Manager for Winooski.

Currently, she is Chair of the SeVEDS Board and a member of the State Transportation Board. Previously, she served on the Windham Regional Commission, the SEVT Board, as the Interim CEO at NECCA, and in senior staff positions with the Windham&Windsor Housing Trust and Retreat Farm. Early in her career, Harrison was Assistant to the Finance Director in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in Florida, she was the Solid Waste Director for Martin County, the Assistant Village Manager for Tequesta, and an 8year elected member of the Jupiter Town Council.

Wendy’s husband is Peter Elwell, the recently retired Town Manager of Brattleboro.

Wendy and Peter have been married for 35 years, have 2 adult children, and live in Brattleboro with their dog, Derby.
