Brattleboro School Shelter in Place Resolved 9/12/2025

Hello Families of the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union,

I’m reaching out from the Office of the Superintendent to relay information about a “Shelter in Place” protocol that took place at Brattleboro Union High School, Brattleboro Area Middle School and Windham Regional Career Center (the “BU6 Campus”) this afternoon, which has been resolved with no issues. Officers from the Brattleboro PD arrived promptly to assess the situation.

The matter has been resolved, and we want to inform our school community that there was no trouble, and we’ve resumed our regular schedules. At approximately 1:03 this afternoon, gunshots were heard on the BU6 campus, coming from the direction of Fort Dummer. The Shelter in Place protocol was immediately called, and students and staff complied with grace and promptness. Due to their proximity to BU6, Oak Grove School was called, and out of an abundance of caution, they also sheltered in place.

Brattleboro PD determined that a resident outside of the “Town Safety Zone” was shooting a gun on their property. No laws or ordinances were broken. We are proud of our staff and students and the BPD, who managed our protocols in a manner that allowed for timely response. The shelter in place protocol ended at 1:30 pm. We are happy to report that all are safe.
