The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at 7:30am in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center. It is anticipated that the Board will immediately enter into executive session to discuss pending or probable civil litigation to which the Town is or may be a party and mediation or arbitration. If time allows following the executive session, it is anticipated that the Board will enter into deliberative session to discuss site visits and public hearings held on June 28, 2016, re: (1) Minshall Street, (2) Bittersweet Lane, and (3) Wickopee Hill Road / Gulf Road.

Twilight on the Tavern Lawn presents The Gaslight Tinkers on Sunday, July 24

Twilight Music continues its 14th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 24 with Celtic world beat quartet The Gaslight Tinkers. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 21. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, Green Mountain Well, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of July 25th

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts is pleased to host an artist talk by the gallery’s current featured artist Jon Gregg on Saturday, July 23 at 5pm. Jon Gregg: evolving a mark will be on exhibit at both MGFA locations (183 Main Street and the new MGFA Annex at 132 Main Street in the Brooks House Atrium) through August 14th.

Jon Gregg’s work features gestural, abstract, richly textured oil paintstick on paper and canvas. Fortress-like structures and crowded spaces are central themes, even as his characters are caught mid-narrative, jostled by insistent markmaking and surface activity.

Business Pitch Practice Session for Technology Entrepreneurs Scheduled for July 21

The Brattleboro Area Tech networking group will meet on July 21 at 6:00 when it holds its first Business Pitch Practice Session. The meeting will be at the Marlboro Grad Center in Brattleboro..

The event will provide an informal setting where would-be entrepreneurs can present technology-oriented business ideas to a sympathetic audience. Each presenter will be given 5 minutes to make a presentation, followed by a short question and answer.

This one is specifically for technology entrepreneurs. Presenters from all stages of business development are encouraged to attend and participate, from those with only a concept to those who are out actively raising money to fund their startup.

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, July 17th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM (I-91 will remain open). Traffic conditions on both I-91 and through the town will be monitored closely throughout the day. Should traffic congestion become an issue, the ramps may be re-opened until traffic conditions improve. This will be managed actively throughout the day until peak traffic volumes have passed.

Governor Shumlin Awards $450k for Bradley House Renovations

Brattleboro, VT—Governor Peter Shumlin awarded $450,000 yesterday to the Town of Brattleboro for renovations and an expansion of Bradley House, a Level III Residential Care Home located on Harris Avenue. The planned renovations will enhance the property’s capacity, accessibility and safety.

The award, recommended by the Vermont Community Development Program (VCDP); and confirmed by Vermont Secretary of the Agency of Commerce and Community Development, Patricia Moulton; was presented by the Governor at a Bradley House ceremony. Approximately 50 people were on-hand to witness the presentation of awards to Brattleboro and six other recipients.

Next Stage Arts Project and Twilight Music present singer, songwriter and guitarist Michael Johnson, plus the Vermont-based Americana duo Laura Molinelli and Ben Campbell, at Next Stage on Friday, July 8 at 7:30 pm.

Michael Johnson began playing guitar at age thirteen, and over the next ten years, he won an international talent contest, recorded for Epic Records, studied classical guitar with Graciano Tarrago at Liceo Conservatory in Barcelona, Spain and joined the Chad Mitchell Trio for a year, spending some of that time co‐writing with fellow band member John Denver. After a short stint as an off‐Broadway actor, he released his first album “There Is A Breeze,” produced by Peter Yarrow and Phil Ramone on Atlantic Records in 1971.

Sanders Defends Vermont’s GMO Labeling Law

WASHINGTON, July 6 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Wednesday said legislation that could soon come to the floor of the U.S. Senate would undermine efforts in states around the country to help Americans stay informed about what goes into their food.

“The American people have a right to know what they’re eating,” Sanders said during a press conference on Capitol Hill. “That is why states like Vermont, Maine, Connecticut and Alaska have adopted laws to label goods containing GMOs and why many other states are interested and on the path to do that.”

Chroma Technology to Expand in Southern Vermont

Bellows Falls, VT – The Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation and the Town of Rockingham have announced a development project with Chroma Technology Corp. of Bellows Falls. A successful development process will see Chroma add a 40,000 sf expansion and upwards of 26 new jobs to their existing Imtec Drive location.

“This is a wonderful result after several years of collaboration and discussion with the Town of Rockingham, the Bellows Falls Area Development Corporation and Chroma about the possibilities of relocation or expansion,” said Rockingham Town Manager Willis “Chip” Stearns. “We are pleased Chroma has made this decision and the Selectboard supports this project.”
