Guilford VT artist, Gregory Damien Grinnell has worked in multimedia for most of his career, engaging painting, sculpture, film, audio, and site-specific installation to create works that explore both narrative and non-narrative perspectives.
His current practice investigates the sequential nature of these mediums, examining how a body of work can operate as a meta-narrative composed of interconnected sub-narratives. Within this intentionally constructed framework, thematic elements may be read either as deeply interrelated components of a unified environment or as more autonomous actions unfolding within a shared world.
Influenced by the cut-and-paste visual language of punk and poster art, and drawing on imagery from both nature and popular culture, each work—whether painting, film, or audio—functions as a “chapter” within a larger system. Titles and visual panels combine to form montages that can be arranged sequentially or non-sequentially, contributing to an evolving body of work. Collectively, these pieces inhabit a self-contained “meta-verse” populated by UFOs, three-eyed infants, enigmatic sounds, strange lights, and echoes of Cold War–era paranoia.
The work on display at Latchis Gallery 4 (50 Main St., Brattleboro VT) are all paintings and continue the language and imagery established through his multi-media work.
On view through May 10, 2026 with a reception during GalleryWalk, May 1st.
