Brattleboro, VT

Because of school district consolidation under Act 46, the Brattleboro Town School District’s five-member school board was dissolved on June 30th. As of July 1st, the board of the merged district, the Windham Southeast School District (WSESD), will make policy and budget planning decisions for Academy School, Green Street School, Oak Grove School and Early Education Services, as well as the five other schools of the merged district.

Information about times and locations of WSESD meetings, along with contact information for board members, is available on WSESD Board’s page on the Supervisory Union (WSESU) website at http://www.wsesu.org under the school boards menu. Meetings will rotate between schools. The next WSESD meeting is at 6pm on July 24 at Putney Central School. The next WSESD meeting taking place in Brattleboro is scheduled for August 7 at 6pm at Academy School.

The WSESD board is working to put local Leadership Councils into place by the beginning of next school year. These councils will consist of parents, community members, teachers, administrators, and possibly students who will advise the board on issues of importance at each school. Individuals interested in joining the Academy School, Green Street School, or Oak Grove School Leadership Councils should watch for information in the school newsletters and on the WSESD website.

A WSESD sub-committee is working on amendments to the default Articles of Agreement currently in place. The amended articles will be presented to the voters for approval on a date to be determined. One area under consideration for amendment is board representation. Currently the board consists of two members from each of the four towns in the district, Brattleboro, Dummerston, Guilford and Putney. The board is considering whether to offer voters the option of having a larger number of board members from Brattleboro to reflect the larger student body, population, and tax revenue that Brattleboro contributes to the school district.

Our schools in Brattleboro are places of deep learning, creativity, compassion and diversity because of the hard work and passion of our administrators, faculty, staff, children, and community members. It is our sincere hope that through continued participation of all of our communities, Brattleboro schools and all the schools of WSESD will continue to thrive and grow.

Sincerely,

Former members of the Brattleboro Town School Board
