Weekend Comedy Series: Rodney Dangerfield

Is it the bugged-out look on his face? His nervous energy? The self-deprecation? Maybe we just don’t get the respect we deserve, and Rodney speaks for us.

Rodney Dangerfield is old-school, but hip nonetheless. Here we find him performing in 1995, reeling off nearly an hour of non-stop one-liners. Jokes about being ugly, the wife, sex, drugs, being old, and of course, getting no respect. Jokes like “My father wouldn’t take me to the zoo. He told me, “If they want you, they’ll come and get you.”

Dangerfield barely give you time for his jokes to register before he’s on to the next. It’s really astounding. Try to tell just three or four of his bits in succession without stumbling. He makes it look easy, as if he’s just hanging out and talking to you. It comes of years and years of professional comedy work, from the Catskills to Ed Sullivan and the Tonight Show.

As with all Weekend Comedy Series, a WARNING: You really shouldn’t watch this if you get offended easily, dislike swearing, are disturbed by insults, are squeamish about sex. or have troubles with humor. There are adult situations, language and themes. Really. Turn away now. Ask permission from a responsible party before continuing. Dangerfield is a dirty old man.

For everyone else, here’s some classic nightclub Rodney Dangerfield at the MGM Grand.
