Brattleboro Historical Society Announces New Oral History Project

  • Great idea!

No one really says clearly what the project is in the video, but it appears that this is a new attempt to gather up oral histories from everyone in town to document the time period of about 1920 or 1930 to the present.

It sounds as if the Historical Society will be offering ways for people to share their memories, and these will be collected and curated into a collection, possibly similar to the Annals of Brattleboro books that covered earlier Brattleboro history. Maybe stories will be shared online at their web site.

It isn’t clear if BHS is going beyond oral histories and will be collecting photos, films, videos, tape recordings, and objects as part of this, but I’m sure they’d be interested in those sorts of things, too.

As someone who likes looking into our history, I greatly appreciate this new effort to collect new stories and memories. Often one can feel as though they are small and don’t matter, but history has a way of equalizing things, and putting stories into the record for others to explore is a gift to the future.

I hope everyone who has a story to tell, which should be just about everybody, finds a way to participate.
