1886 Advertisement for N. I. Hawley

Hawley sells clothes. Each season he goes to New York City to find the latest and greatest fashions and best prices for his Brattleboro customers. He returns with a new load, tells us all what he has for sale, and we buy it from him.

  • Turning them into money

    I’d love some fancy bordered handkerchiefs in my Christmas stocking this year. And who is buying the undressed kids for .75 a pair? Sounds quite suspicious and unsavory.
    I enjoy the way he describes just how he wants this sale to go:”I want to turn as many of them into money as possible by January 1st.” This is the fur lined collars he’s talking about – not the undressed kids..

          They were probably handkerchiefs, not gloves. It’s in the handkerchief column.

          A plush cloak might be nice.

  • Today, 1882, in the news

    1882: Monday was a bona fide holiday at Hawley’s and his corps of clerks were invited to Christmas dinner with him and his family at the Brooks House.
