Twilight Music continues its 14th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 24 with Celtic world beat quartet The Gaslight Tinkers. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 21. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, Green Mountain Well, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.
We invite you to be a children’s face painter at the 2nd Annual Vermont JerkFest in Brattleboro. We seek experienced, friendly, and artistic people who love working with kids! The shifts run from 10 am – 1 pm, 1 pm – 4 pm, 4pm – 7pm.

Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts is pleased to host an artist talk by the gallery’s current featured artist Jon Gregg on Saturday, July 23 at 5pm. Jon Gregg: evolving a mark will be on exhibit at both MGFA locations (183 Main Street and the new MGFA Annex at 132 Main Street in the Brooks House Atrium) through August 14th.
Jon Gregg’s work features gestural, abstract, richly textured oil paintstick on paper and canvas. Fortress-like structures and crowded spaces are central themes, even as his characters are caught mid-narrative, jostled by insistent markmaking and surface activity.
Samirah Evans and the George Kaye Quintet will make summertime living easy with a jazz concert featuring the music ofGeorge Gershwin at Historic Memorial Hall in Wilmington, Vermont. Show time is at 8:00pm on Saturday, July 30.
Vocalist Evans and bassist Kaye will be joined by Miro Sprague (piano), Michael Zsoldos (reeds), Eric Miller (trombone) and Claire Arenius (drums). The first set will consist of Gershwin’s popular jazz standards, while the second set will feature selections from the composer’s opera, “Porgy and Bess” covered in the style of the 1958 recording of the work by Miles Davis with the Gil Evans Orchestra.
The Brattleboro Area Tech networking group will meet on July 21 at 6:00 when it holds its first Business Pitch Practice Session. The meeting will be at the Marlboro Grad Center in Brattleboro..
The event will provide an informal setting where would-be entrepreneurs can present technology-oriented business ideas to a sympathetic audience. Each presenter will be given 5 minutes to make a presentation, followed by a short question and answer.
This one is specifically for technology entrepreneurs. Presenters from all stages of business development are encouraged to attend and participate, from those with only a concept to those who are out actively raising money to fund their startup.

I was reminded this week of a somewhat famous lecture by author Kurt Vonnegut on the shapes of stories. He creates graphs showing how stories can be plotted into diagrams, and that despite a diversity of tales out there, most stories follow some very simple story arcs.
Since giving his lecture, others have done similar analysis and studies of well-known and popular stories and their data basically backs up Vonnegut’s propositions. About six story arcs account for the majority of stories told.
Can you tell a tale using one of the common patterns? What happens if you break the pattern?

Learn to play the ukulele from scratch in a small group class. We will learn tuning, basic chords and strumming techniques, and a bunch of fun easy songs to play.
Class runs for 6 Wednesday evenings, from 7:15-8:15pm, at Neighbor’s Hall in Brattleboro. There will be no class on Aug. 17, and the final class will be Aug. 31. Sliding scale tuition $140-160.

44 years ago romance, culture and inspiration were found at the Marlboro Music Festival. Here’s the story….
Vermont Phoenix, July 7th, 1855 “BALLOON ASCENT.—Mons Gustave Reynard, an experienced aeronaut, ascended in a balloon from Springfield on the 4th. The Springfield Republican says:
“The wind was high, and when the cords were loosed, the balloon with its daring aeronaut shot upward like a rocket. It rapidly rose and swept away to the east of north and in a very few minutes was lost behind a large bank of white clouds. When at an estimated height of four thousand feet, the aeronaut detached his parachute, an umbrella-like structure, to which was attached a live white cat in net work and basket. This came slowly and safely down, but was wafted so far north by the wind that it only reached the earth in Chicopee Falls. Pussy was very badly frightened, net unhurt.
In 1969 Peter Gould was, “tired of the Vietnam War, [and] angry at my county,” as he fled the disconsolate urban chaos in search of an alternative. He found it in at Packer Corners, in Guilford, Vermont and spent the next 9 years at the farm.
In June of 2016 Peter sat with Brattleboro educator and historian Bill Holiday to recount those times in Peter’s personal narrative and the narrative of a remarkable place that lives on, nearly 50 years later.
