Weekend Concert Series: The Pogues
In honor of St. Patrick’s Day weekend, I was thinking it might be nice to listen to some Pogues…. The Pogues, for the uninitiated, were an Irish traditional punk rock band from London, led by the inimitable Shane MacGowan and his accomplice Spider Stacy. They’re best known for their Christmas ballad Fairy Tale of New York, featuring Kirsty MacColl, but MacGowan and the band wrote many memorable songs, dripping with authenticity and God knows what else, that make you think you’ve woken up in a rowdy Irish bar at the height of the party.

Time, Money, And A Little Bit Of Luck
The two scarcest commodities on this planet are money and time. We never seem to have enough of either one. But this isn’t true of everyone. Some people have lots of one, some of the other, and some lucky people have both. How can this be? I have a socioeconomic theory that the time/money ratio is in fact an indicator of economic class. Here’s how it works:
If you have both time and money, you’re probably affluent. You simply have the money and don’t need to work that hard for it, if at all. Consequently, you have lots of time too. The world is your oyster. You can have your cake and eat it too.
Over Hard or Easy?
Many years ago I was employed by a prestigious institute, which partnered with an esteemed university, to visit elementary schools across Vermont (all names withheld) and closely observe classrooms in action. There was a scoring form used, the rubrics were primarily oriented towards engagement, involvement, inspiration, and critical thinking.
One classroom I visited was vaunted in advance as a high scoring classroom on standardized tests, the teacher a veteran known for their effectiveness. This was an early ed room, first or second grade. The teacher was brusque, professional, their M.O. seemed to be some kind of tough love. My work began as usual with the start of the day– sessions lasted a whole day– our role was akin to the Star Trek prime directive, observing only, being careful to not interfere.

The music of The Slambovian Circus of Dreams has been described as “hillbilly-Floyd,” “folk-pop,” “alt-country, roots-rock,” and “surreal Americana” – a clear indicator of its singularly indescribable uniqueness. The quartet taps a broad palette of styles ranging from dusty Americana ballads to huge Pink Floydesque cinematic anthems. Dancing freely between all existing religious and philosophical mythologies, featuring an exotic instrumental arsenal in addition to standard rock regalia, the music is uplifting, empowering and a lot of fun.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Brattleboro AAUW presents: The Theatrical, Eccentric, Flamboyant Madame Sherri, a talk by Eric Stanway on Tues., March 17 at 7 p.m. at the Brattleboro Historical Society History Center at the Masonic Temple, 196 Main St., Brattleboro.
Stanway is author of “Madame Sherri: The Special Edition,” an expanded biography of the diva of the 20’s who scandalized the locals for years before succumbing to poverty and dying in a Brattleboro boarding house, leaving her castle in the woods of West Chesterfield, N.H., to crumble to ruins.

Even though I’m a writer, I imagine I’d have difficulty mastering source code. Code is written using text described as “human-readable computer language.” I’d like to think I write human-readable language, it’s the computer technical writing I fall down on.
Morse code, an electrical coding system, has been around for over 150 years. You might think of it in laymen’s terms as an early simplified form of source code.Then and now, coding is a way to convert plain language to communicate information or data through a medium using text and symbols and re-convert them (called encoding) back to a medium any recipient can understand.

“A train carrying 15 tanker cars of liquefied propane derailed in Essex junction, Vermont, late on Thursday, but no flammable gas was leaked and there was no danger to the public, according to a local news website on Friday.

Weekend Comedy Series: Patton Oswalt
You probably know Patton Oswalt from TV or movie roles. I thought he did a great job as the voice of Remy for Ratatouille, for example, and as the assistant deputy mayor in the Reno 911 movie.
His comedy takes on popular culture, comics, religion and atheism, and social issues. This show is from just a few years ago, titled Finest Hour.
Opening Reception on March 7 for John Dimick’s Exhibit “A Mix of Oil and Water”
West Brattleboro, Vt. — The Arts Committee of All Souls Church is hosting an opening reception for “A Mix of Oil and Water,” an exhibit of oils and watercolors by John Dimick of Guilford, on Saturday, March 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. Three dozen works are featured, primarily landscape paintings and prints of scenes in the surrounding region. Several studies of downtown Brattleboro capture the town from unusual vantage points, such as along the railroad tracks. A few of the featured works are pairings of the same scene in both mediums to allow viewers an interesting comparison of Dimick’s creative techniques.
Entergy Will Be Allowed to Shrink EPZ
On March 2, 2015, the NRC Commissioners voted to allow VY to shrink it’s Emergency Panning Zone (EPZ) from 10 miles down to the site boundary in ~Arpil 2016. This will eliminate >2 milllion emergency planning dollars per year that Entergy currently provides to Vermont and will allow Entegy to futher reduce site staff at that time.
I haven’t seen an offical Vermont response yet.
The Vermont Jazz Center Presents: The Bill Charlap Trio
On Saturday, March 14th at 8:00 PM, the Vermont Jazz Center welcomes to its stage a piano trio that chooses to focus on the classic sounds of the Great American Songbook. The Bill Charlap Trio, with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington (no relation), represents the epitome of this particular style: elegant, lush, and swinging.
This trio is renowned throughout the world for its work interpreting the lesser-known but equally beautiful songs that were written for musical theater and film. Charlap and his trio pay homage to the great songs that were written when Broadway and Tin Pan Alley provided the soundtrack to popular, North American culture. Charlap states: “The music I’m attracted to – music theater and film music is a different blueprint of American music and popular music… I’m still in love with that beautiful aesthetic of those lyricists and composers of that period.”
First Wednesday Program at Brooks Library: Photography as Fine Art: Alfred Steiglitz and Camera Work
Photographer, gallerist, and magazine editor Alfred Stieglitz was a seminal figure in the history of twentieth-century photography.
Middlebury College professor Kirsten Hoving examines Stieglitz’s work and his advocacy for photography as a fine art, with special attention to his quarterly journal Camera Work. Wednesday March 4th, 7 pm – 9 pm.
On Exhibit at Brooks Library in March
Lots of art at the Library this month! Mezzanine Wall & Main Floor: Student Art Month. The Arts Council of Windham County is inviting the community to join them in recognizing and honoring the many young people in Windham County who are involved in a wide range of the arts.
So, for the 34th consecutive year, they have set aside March as Student Art Month, a time to spotlight, through shows and events, the terrific kinds of work coming from our young people and the teachers and school programs which help these young artists to blossom.
