Tech Help at Brooks Library

In addition to drop-in hours and as-needed help,
Brooks Library offers regular weekly and monthly technology support sessions. Appointments are available weekly on Mondays from 3-5 pm with Electronic Services Support Specialist Cal LaFountain.

Drop-in hours are available monthly with Reference Librarian Jeanne Walsh on the First Tuesday and Friday of every month. In addition to direct help from library staff, the library offers free online technology courses, from Computer Basics to advanced applications, via Universal Class, free with your library card.

Do you want to increase your knowledge and comfort on the internet, in social media, or on your smart phone or tablet? Cal LaFountain, the Library’s Electronic Services Support Specialist, is available for brief, private consultations to help library patrons learn basic tasks using computers and mobile devices, such as setting up and using an email account, creating a Facebook account, or downloading e-books or other digital media. The library has computers available, or participants may bring their own tablets, smart phones, or laptops to explore the capabilities of those devices.

Cal will be booking half-hour appointments on Mondays from 3:00-5:00. If patrons have questions that might take longer than a half hour, they may request two consecutive appointments, and Cal will honor those requests when possible. To enable as many people as possible to access this service, patrons will be limited to three appointments with Cal within a two-month period. To book time with Cal, please contact him directly at (802) 254-5290 x104 or cal@brookslibraryvt.org. Please let him know your full name, phone number, and email address (if you have one), and provide a brief explanation of the task you want to work on.

Cal is also available on an as-needed basis to help with technology questions in the library, and Reference Librarian Jeanne Walsh provides assistance with library technology throughout the day.

There are also formal Technology Drop-in hours at the Reference Desk with Reference Librarian Jeanne Walsh on the first Tuesday of every month, 4 – 6 pm and first Friday of every month, 11 am -1 pm. Get started with downloadable e-books and e-audio. Learn about searching and placing holds in the library catalog. Access your library account to place holds, renew your items, suggest new titles for the collection, and make reading lists for yourself or to share with other library users. Get help with online tasks like filling out forms and emailing attachments.…and more.

NO QUESTIONS ARE TOO SMALL OR TOO SILLY! Bring your devices if you have them: iPads, smartphones, laptops, etc. Whether you visit during drop-in hours or another time, the library is your free connection to public computers, wifi, online resources, and personal assistance to help you increase your technological literacy and achieve goals in your life. For more information, contact Jeanne Walsh at jeanne@brookslibraryvt.org or at (802) 254-5290 x109, or stop by anytime!
