BMH Offers Free Health Series on “Freedom to Choose”

Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is offering a free health education workshop series entitled, “Freedom to Choose: Basic Concepts and Principles,” beginning on September 23, 2014.

Co-sponsored by BMH, Grace Cottage, and the Brattleboro Retreat as part of Wellness in Windham, this new, interactive bimonthly health education series is designed to empower people to advocate for the medical treatments that they want by providing them with the knowledge and language necessary to understand what is available.

The “Freedom to Choose” series will be presented by Dr. Ani Hawkinson, educator and naturopath at HeartSong Health in Putney. She will lead participants in exploring the foundational concepts and principles covering treatment approaches for the management of blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides, blood sugar, weight, and pain.

Different roads lead to optimal physical and mental well-being, while different individuals have varying expectations, resources, and goals for their health. By the time participants finish this unique and informative foundational session, they will be familiar with the following concepts and understand why they are important for good health: genotype and phenotype, genetics and epigenetics, fetal programming and therapeutic lifestyles, clinical and orthomolecular nutrition, natural and conventional medicine, modern pharmacology and phytopharmica, homeodynamics and lifestyle modification.

Participants will also learn about basic principles of natural healing: tolle causam (find the underlying cause), vis medicatrix (the healing power of nature), primum non nocere (first do not harm), and tolle causam (treat the whole).

This workshop series is free and open to the public, which will take place from 6:30 to 8:00 PM in the BMH Brew Barry Conference Room. Web-based educational materials will be included.
