Please join the Green Mountain Conservancy (GMC) for our Fall Hike Series on three GMC nature preserves. These hikes are free and open to the public.
On Sunday, September 27th at 4 pm there will be an early evening hike along the Old Oaks Headwaters Preserve that includes the opening of the newly established parking area and trail access. The preserve is part of the largely unfragmented 3,000+ acre Harrisville Forest block that provides migration corridors for many species, and is the headwaters for the Green River. Please join us to enjoy a sunset hike on this unique preserve.
Directions: Go to The Campus at Marlboro Music, 2582 South Road, Marlboro, VT 05344. There will be people to guide you to parking and the trailhead. Arrive at 3:45 for parking and a short shuttle to the site.
On Saturday, October 3rd at 10am, GMC is offering a 1-mile round trip hike at the Canoe Brook Nature Preserve, known for its massive ancient white oak trees, a remnant of the farmstead that was built on this property before the revolution. After a very well-attended trail opening last fall, Roger Haydock, local geologist, trail builder and GMC board member, will again lead the hike. Join us to learn about the ecology, geology and history of this serene preserve. While a bit steep in some spots, the trail is generally kid and elder-friendly and is 1/2 mile in and 1/2 mile out. It will be about an hour long.
Directions: Canoe Brook Road, Dummerston, VT 05346. From Route 5 at the Putney Dummerston town line south of Putney, turn right on Canoe Brook Road. After 0.1 mile, turn left to stay on Canoe Brook Road. Continue straight for another 0.7 miles to reach the preserve. The parking area is 0.4 miles further on Canoe Brook Road, on the right.
Saturday, October 10th at 10am, Roger Haydock will lead a hike on the popular Deer Run Nature Preserve. This hike is for seasoned hikers. The planned hiking route is 3.8 – 4.6 miles. Highlights include: babbling brooks, ancient trees, stone walls, hardwood savannas, and spectacular views. Some sections of this hike are steep. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Bring a lunch.
Directions: Meet at the Deer Run parking lot at 940 Camp Arden Rd. in Dummerston, VT. There will be directional signs from the east side of the Dummerston Covered Bridge.
