This is What a Thief Looks Like

She lives in apartment 306 on 9 Canal St in Brattleboro. Her guests like to buzz random apartments late at night (short in and out visits typical of drug sales) and are suspected of stealing my $130 blue Adidas EQT size 10 sneakers. Videos below show her getting caught stealing $40 of bait money I left for a moronic thief who wouldn’t notice the camera on my door.

  • Chapter 2?

    So, what’s the next step?

    • Next Step

The landlord is reviewing their CCTV footage, specifically their camera that is pointed at my doorway (almost all of the apartment is covered by CCTV), to identify the person who went in my doorway and grabbed my $130 Adidas sneakers. They have to go back a few days, so it’s not the easiest process, but tips from neighbors should help narrow down possible times. Once the person is identified, their photo will be reviewed by BPD, who will most likely recognize the individual from the footage, issue a summons, and bring them to court. If that happens, I will file a claim with the Vermont victim’s compensation fund for the value of replacing the sneakers.

As far as the already identified thief two apartments down, who stole the bait money, and brings in a vast number of junkies into the building who likely stole the sneakers, I, and a group of concerned neighbors in the building will be filing complaints with our landlord to get the ugly, white trash piece of garbage evicted.

  • Unfortunate Part

The investigating officer told me the unfortunate reality that the woman will likely have the theft charges dismissed in court, as apparently that’s how our criminal justice system works in Brattleboro; he claims people are rarely held accountable for stealing. Contrary to our legal system, I feel that thieves are the scum of the earth, along with animal abusers, and am compelled to ensure they are held properly accountable for their actions. My ultimate hope is that more residents will use security cameras and bait traps to catch thieves, so that perhaps they will think twice before stealing other’s property in the future. Everyone deserves to feel safe and not have to worry about their possessions being stolen, I’m just doing what I can to make that happen.

  • Brattleboro Police

I don’t think our local PD will spend a lot of time investigating thefts that they regard as “Petty” unless the victim is somebody important. I had $1000 worth of tools stolen and the cops didn’t even visit the site of the robbery.
In Brattleboro, it seems that crime DOES pay.
Good luck, but don’t expect much help from those who “protect and serve”.

    • f-d up

That’s really messed up, I’m sorry that happened and they didn’t do $hit. Over $900 is considered a felony, so they should care. The worst part is Vermont is the only state in the country which doesn’t have a stand your ground law OR a castle doctrine. Stand your ground is debatable, but not having a castle doctrine is insane. If someone comes into your home and threatens you and/or your property, you should have every right to defend your family and possessions by any means necessary. Why we are denied that right is insanity. If home invaders started getting bullets to the head, it would certainly curb the rampant theft in this area. Complete bs we are required to do nothing to defend ourselves.

Police should either enforce the law or we should be given the right to defend ourselves if they choose to not give a f. Being denied either of those rights is un-American.

  • I will say

BPD in my case were phenomenal. Sorry about your experience, I’ve had similar in the past. But every officer I spoke to made a genuine effort to help and resolve the situation. Change of policy? Luck of the draw? Not sure, but I have to give credit where it’s due, and the initial response and follow up by BPD has been great in this instance. I won’t get into further details, but they went above and beyond in subsequent investigation of the person in the video.

  • Never Mind

Police here do suck. Found out they never even issued a summons, and refuse to do anything about the crime, even though the entire theft and confession is on tape, and they specifically advised me that it would be a crime if somewhere were to take the money when I set it up.
