Driving – it’s a privilege, not a right.

Be alert when driving. One moment of inattention can take someone’s life. Don’t take the road for granted!

    Speaking of Rights...

    I read this awhile ago, and think it’s worth relating…And it goes with the theme of this tip..PAY ATTENTION.

    When a driver is exiting their vehicle, they should get into the habit of OPENING THEIR DOOR WITH THE RIGHT HAND.

    This forces them to turn and see out the driver’s door window, to determine if a biker or skater is passing by, and avoids the horrible instance of opening a door into the path of an oncoming rider.

      No flying doors, either

      My technique is to open it a crack and look back through to see who is behind me. It’s sort of an open a bit, then (if clear) open all the way move.

      Not only does it help avoid bikes and skaters, it means my door is never ripped off the hinges by another vehicle, either.

      In Driver’s Ed, they taught us to do a safety check every time we get behind the wheel – seat belt, seat position, rear view mirror, side mirrors, and so on. Part of it was to check these things, but part of it is what this week’s safety tip is about – getting in the right frame of mind.

        Flying doors

        A good friend was involved in one of these incidents…he was passing a stationary car when suddenly the door flew wide open. Door torn off hinges, huge dents front corner of his car. Would have been even worse if it hadn’t happened at slow speed in a parking lot; even then it was too sudden for hiim to stop in time.
