Uri Avnery is an Israeli writer and founder of the Gush Shalom peace movement. A member of the Irgun as a teenager, Avnery sat in the Knesset from 1965–74 and 1979–81. He was also the owner of HaOlam HaZeh, an Israeli news magazine, from 1950 until it closed in 1993.
He is famous for crossing the lines during the Siege of Beirut to meet Yassir Arafat on 3 July 1982, the first time the Palestinian leader ever met with an Israeli. Avnery is the author of several books about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including 1948: A Soldier’s Tale, the Bloody Road to Jerusalem (2008); Israel’s Vicious Circle (2008); and My Friend, the Enemy (1986). It isn’t “Death to the Arabs” “Death to the Jews” or “Death to the America” that’s at stake. It is the irretrievable loss of the good and wonderful life we could have had without religious intentional callous and cruel disregard for life itself and the ‘Death Culture’ they have left us in its place.

The day society puts the words and deeds of the Jews, Christians and Muslims behind us is the very day we and our planet will benefit immediately.
Wholes greater than the sum of their parts
US. Attorney General Eric Holder is worried about wholes that are greater than the sum of their parts.
Take, for instance, the current mix of bomb-makers from Yemen with foreign fighters in Syria.
“That’s a deadly combination, where you have people who have the technical know-how along with the people who have this kind of fervor to give their lives in support of a cause that is directed at the United States and directed at its allies. And it’s something that gives us really extreme, extreme concern,” he told ABC’s “This Week.” He estimated there are about 7,000 foreign fighters in Syria, coming from places like Europe and the United States.
“In some ways, it’s more frightening than anything I think I’ve seen as attorney general,” he said. “This is a situation that we can see developing and the potential that I see coming up, the negative potential I see coming out of the facts in Syria and Iraq now, are quite concerning,” he said.
Since it started in 2011, the conflict in Syria has left more than 150,00 dead and some 680,000 injured.
