Merciless Indian Savages

Quote: “He has…endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.”

Who said it and where is it published? No fair googling the sentence or the title-that’s too easy. I was astonished when I learned the source.

  • Hmmm

Unfortunately, that could be many people.

Seems like it might have been said between the Revolutionary War and maybe the Civil War. I’m guessing it is someone we all look up to, so… maybe Washington or Jefferson? (I’m following the ‘no looking it up’ rule…)

  • I think I know the answer

I did not look anything up. My recollection is that it is one of the indictments agains King George in the Declaration of Independence.

    • I like that.

Oooh, good guess. It reads a bit like that list.

    • Give that man a cigar!

It is, indeed, in the Declaration of Independence. The words are by Thomas Jefferson.

      • If Jefferson had Twitter

Do you think this jab at the King is similar to taunting tweets of today? Was Jefferson posturing or did he believe this to be true (or did someone make him add it to the list?)

        • Those are great questions, Grotke!

Too often really stupid things are said in order to score points. Like accusing Trump of pooping in his pants.
