  • 214 Elliot St. Fire

The fire quickly became fully engaged. In the evening I sat with my Elliot St. neighbor on her stoop and a Northfield fireman told us that 11 fire departments were involved, some were covering at fire stations. It’s almost 7 am and a few of the last remaining trucks rolled by my window. Even the trucks sounded tired. The entire night of blue and red flashing lights.
When the fire started some of the tenants were on the sidewalk crying. It was heartbreaking. One woman was in her bathrobe and she had the flu. The smoke was intense, smelled foul and probably full of toxic materials. It billowed up and then took a turn and went down low covering the fire ladders in thick smoke. For a time we couldn’t see the men at the top of the ladders and I wondered how they could breath this smoke in.
The forecast last night was rain, and rain it did but not from the sky, from the hoses that connected from hydrants on Elliot and School St. on Frost. There may have been more connections but I did not get to the other side of 214.
I spotted the landlord arriving. After he parked his car he ran down the street into the smoke and flashing lights. Later I saw him walking back.
The lights on Elliot were shut for the safety of the firemen who were working next to the wires. As darkness descended people came out of their houses. We talked, some played chess, we all watched as the flames leaped from the front of 214.
When I finally went home I sat in the dark and listened to the sound of motors running, water rushing through a hose, and the muted sound voices chatting. My windows were flashing red and the night fell into day. The majority of the lights are gone except at the site and a police car covering the corner of Elliot and School. It’s a new day with new losses and the need for charity and kindness to the people of 214 Elliot St.

    • Good report...

Thanks for the report and details, like the address.

In past events, the United Way has been a good place for people to give money and other items to help the victims of the fire.

    • Thank you for this

Thank you for this detailed–though heartbreaking–writing of the fire. We are all a bit somber here this morning. I have noticed that both Love it Twice and Kidsplayce are accepting clothing donations. they both list size details on their Facebook pages.

  • Thursday noonish

I drove by a little while ago. The building is the 3 story building on the south side of Elliot between the little park and Dompier Electric, if you’ve had trouble placing it.

Neighbors are still out discussing things and people are taking looks. Brattleboro Police were on hand to keep an eye on things.

Most of the damage isn’t visible from the street – the back and top seem to have gotten the worst of it.

There’s also the issue of surrounding neighborhood basements getting some flooding and water damage.
