  • Pay as I Throw?

Does this new ordinance mean It’s going to cost me to litter?
I so like to throw with impunity.

  • PAYT

Thanks for getting this discussion going. I hear that Vernon’s PAYT is up and running smoothly. I am sure that there will be questions. Why can’t we continue to just throw things away? First, because there is no “away” (everywhere is somewhere) and second because there are increasing costs for piling stuff up in big holes in the ground. PAYT is all about metering costs. The more you throw away, the more you pay. By increasing recycling, reusing, reducing and composting your PAYT fees will go down. By relying on throwing stuff “away” you will pay more.

    • The Depression

This time around, the equation had changed. There are now tools and systems for reducing the weight of trash through weekly recycling pickup and curbside compost. We’ve got an indoor compost unit to make our own, plus recycling, and our trash becomes minimal.

But, paying for 50 or so bags a year will be an annoying, added expense. I strongly hope they are priced at the lowest possible rate. People in town are losing their houses. Adding any straws to our local camels’ backs is highly risky. Perhaps let people have one bag free and have them pay for any extras. Be careful and do not assume this won’t break some budgets. It will.

In that regard, it seems like poverty may be taking care of this, too. No money = no purchases = no trash.
