AGENDA
(1) Approve Minutes from November 11.
(2) Open discussion on the question of a Cultural/Creative District in Brattleboro focusing on three components.
(a) generating a salutary definition of Cultural/Creative District.
(b) identifying the benefits and drawbacks of a Cultural/Creative District.
(c) imagining how to organize the downtown arts community to implement a Cultural/Creative District.
(3) NEA Our Town Grant. Update and planning for completion of Track 2 and implementation of Track 3.
(4) Update on the jury process for new art at the Transportation Center.
(5) Discussion about changing the policy applying to the mural space at the Transportation Center from temporary art to permanent art.
(6) Other.
Toward a Brattleboro Arts Council
I am engaged in some tentative discussions about founding a Brattleboro Arts Council.
The Town Arts Committee (TAC) was a good first step, but it is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Brattleboro Selectboard.
It has long been recognized that local arts councils per se — called ‘local arts organizations’ — are best organized as non-profit, charitable and educational entities which are independent bodies. This is especially true so that a category of ‘official art’ might never arise, and that the arts and culture generally should remain in the domain of freedom of speech and of expression.
I look forward to discussion of a possible Brattleboro Arts Council with anyone who is interested. Watch for an organizational meeting, should we decide to proceed with this initiative.
