Brattleboro Rain Storm Damage

The section of Black Mountain Road that is between Kipling Road and Dickenson Road is closed and will remain closed until further notice. That section was damaged during last night’s storm and the damage worsened significantly this morning. State and Town personnel are assessing the extent of the damage and will develop a plan for addressing it. In the meantime, all Black Mountain Road traffic will use Kipling Road and Dickenson Road as a short detour around the closed area.

While the very heavy rain and wind last night kept Fire Department and DPW crews busy throughout the night, all other damage to public infrastructure was minor.

The Fire Department pumped a lot of basements and DPW fixed several areas of minor damage both on gravel roads and paved roads. Both departments are continuing to address those types of minor and isolated situations this morning. In addition, there were severe stream backups at several locations that required culverts to be cleared during the night. In all cases, the water receded quickly when the obstructions were removed. The most severe of those incidents occurred near the Black Mountain Trailer Park and the flooding at that location required a 15-minute closure of I-91 (between 4:15 and 4:30 this morning). The flooding at that culvert was unrelated to the roadway damage that occurred further up Black Mountain Road.

The sewage treatment plant operated at full capacity for a period during the night, at a flow rate that is 4 times greater than the normal daily flow rate and double the normal rainstorm flow rate. No damage or operational issues were noted at the plant.

Some of the minor isolated roadway damage occurred on Bonnyvale Road. The retaining wall on Bonnyvale Road near the intersection with Western Avenue will be inspected today to determine if any stop-gap remedial work is needed before we proceed with the replacement of that wall during the upcoming construction season.

The Police Department also was extra busy overnight, providing assistance to residents and to the Fire Department and DPW.

Ouch. Who would have predicted that the Black Mtn area would have such a run of bad luck with water in the last year?

Hope everyone is ok. Water damage is really lousy. I’ve had it happen a few times in my life, and it is always depressing and not fun to try to dry out.

  • Ashuelot River

I was over in downtown Hinsdale yesterday and the Ashuelot was near to overflowing its banks. Scary!
