Noticed Around Brattleboro – Winter 2017

It is time once again to list the little things that have caught your eye around town as you go about your day.

What have you noticed lately?

– NECCA’s circus school building on Putney Rd is looking good. The steel frame is up, and there’s a really nice sign out in front of it all.

– At the moment, we have two fire stations in West Brattleboro, which will be a good trivia question someday in the future: “Did West Brattleboro ever have 2 fire stations?” Yes! In 2017 as the new one went up and before the old one came down.

  • Come and Gone

This is a tough one because I’ve hardly been out lately, but here goes:

Cream of the Crop consignment shop has moved to the Black Mountain Plaza on Putney Road.

The street lights on Main St seem to have been blinking a lot lately.

A new store is coming in next to Brattleboro Books, the used book shop, but I can’t remember what it is.

An aerially acrobatic flock of some kind of bird was doing lengthy maneuvers in the sky behind one of the hotels on Putney Road.

Also, there’s a very large maple tree missing from Cedar St (sad face).

That’s it for me. Did I miss anything?

    • Rumor has it that Peter

Rumor has it that Peter Haven’s is expanding…

Marlboro Graduate Center will be leaving Brattleboro soon. Curious if the sign will be coming down shortly….

  • pot holes

Early pot holes in the streets due to big temperature swings.

  • New sign at 118 Elliot

There is a new tri-color sign in three languages outside of the 118 Elliot venue:

“We are all neighbors. You are welcome here.”

    In Spanish, Arabic and English.

(I am paraphrasing from memory; someone in town might want to take a look and give it to us exactly, or better yet, add a photo.)

  • Some media notices

My timing of noticing these might be a bit off but media wise:

    – Rutland Herald can be read again – the paywall seems gone. I wish I had know sooner. It’s a good paper and was a shame that it was hidden away (online) for years.

    – WKVT is no longer Classic Rock. It is Iconic Rock. (You may discuss and debate the significance of this…)

  • Fireworks is apparently

Fireworks is apparently closing later this week and then reopening later in the month as a new restaurant. They say the menu will change but I hope not too much. Fireworks has been my “go to” place to bring visitors from out of town and have always had great food there. Wonder what’s behind the change?

Also in eating news – Elliot Street Fish & Chips & More is going to start offering delivery! I think it starts this week- not sure of the areas they will be serving or how they’ll keep fish and chips crispy but it will be great to be able to get something other than pizza or Chinese delivered on a cold winter night.

  • Estey Piano in TV Opening

This isn’t really around Brattleboro, nor is it especially recent, but it does have to do with Brattleboro.

If you watch the opening credits to season 1 of A Different World, Kadeem Harrison pretends to play an Estey piano in the back of a pickup truck.

Estey’s pianos were made in NYC, but it “our” Estey name.

Also, Red Clover Commons seems to be fitting into the neighborhood fairly well.

  • Sportie's Closed

From a sign in the window, it appears that The Sportsman’s Lounge (Sportie’s) on Canal St. has closed.

  • Heart

Big red heart shaped lights on Main Street (and some of the holiday stars still left up)
