No work will be conducted on the project from Noon on Friday, May 22, 2026 until 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2026 in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS:
Vermont Route 9: (Night Work)
Single-lane closures are scheduled to be in place on Vermont Route 9 beginning at the Edmund Heights intersection in West Brattleboro and progressing east to the Interstate 91 Exit 2 interchange. Between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, flaggers will direct alternating traffic patterns through the work zones. No street-side parking will be available in these areas of VT 9 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning. Motorcyclists should watch for grooved and uneven surfaces.
U.S. Route 5: Brattleboro to Dummerston (Day Work)
Single-lane closures will be in place on U.S. Route 5 from Dummerston to Putney for multiple operations from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flaggers will assist with alternating traffic patterns. Expect delays in this area.
U.S. Route 5: Putney Road (Night Work)
One single-lane closure will be in place on U.S. Route 5 on the bridge over the West River just south of the intersection with Spring Tree Road. From 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday night through Friday morning, flaggers will control alternating traffic patterns through this work zone.
Downtown Brattleboro (Night Work)
A mobile work zone is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. throughout downtown Brattleboro continuing on Monday night. Uniformed Traffic Officers will assist and short lane closures with alternating traffic patterns may be implemented in areas where the shoulder is not wide enough to accommodate the vehicle.
VT 9 milling operation started this week.
CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES:
Vermont Route 9: (Night Work)
Pothole repair and paving are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday nights on VT 9. Milling will resume after these two nights of paving and continue until complete. Crews will begin adjusting drainage and utility structures on Tuesday night. Note: crews will have noise monitoring equipment to measure the decibel levels of this operation. The contractor will continue with their plan to work four night shifts a week in this area – beginning Monday night and ending on Friday morning.
U.S. Route 5: Brattleboro to Dummerston (Day Work)
Initial layer of pavement is complete and paving the top course of pavement won’t be for a couple of weeks. New guardrail installation and guardrail adjustments will happen next week as well as shoulder clean up. Drainage and utility structure adjustments are also scheduled.
U.S. Route 5: Putney Road (Night Work)
A crew is performing some superstructure concrete repairs on Bridge 8 over the West River. This work is scheduled for next week from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., weather permitting.
Downtown Brattleboro (Night Work)
The vacuum truck will continues to clean out structures.
LOCATION:
This contract is a composite of three separate paving projects with detailed locations listed below. It includes all Class 1 limits of Brattleboro which are typically noted by a sign stating “State Highway Ends” and “State Highway Begins”. Work to be done on these projects includes coarse milling (grinding off the top layers of pavement) to a depth of 2 inches and paving a ½ inch leveling course and then a 1 ½ inch top course of asphalt. ADA evaluation of sidewalk and pedestrian crossings, sign replacement, guardrail repair and replacement, center line rumble strip location evaluation and installation, drainage work, and other highway improvements are also planned as a part of these projects.
Brattleboro PC25(5)
VT 9: The project begins at Edward Heights intersection and extends approximately 1.7 miles east to the I-91 Exit 2 interchange.
Brattleboro-Putney STP PS25(11)
U.S. 5: The project begins on U.S. 5 in Brattleboro at the “State Highway Begins” sign at the intersection with Vermont Avenue and extends northerly along U.S. 5 for approximately 8.0 miles to just north of the Putney Landing Road intersection in Putney. Work will also take place within the roundabout and from the roundabout east to the New Hampshire state line on VT 9.
Brattleboro PC25(6) – Substantially Complete in 2025
U.S. 5: The project begins at the intersection with Generous Street and extends approximately 1.9 miles north to the Vermont Avenue intersection.
VT 9: The project begins at I-91 Exit 2 interchange and extends approximately 1.0 mile east to the intersection with U.S. 5 at the traffic signal.
VT 30: The project begins at the U.S. 5 and VT 30 interchange and follows VT 30 three tenths of a mile north to approximately the intersection with Cedar Street.
VT 142: The project begins at the Class 1 limit sign just south of the railroad tracks near Riverside Drive and follows VT 142 north to the intersection with U.S. 5 at the traffic signal, skipping over the newly paved portion of VT 142 completed for the Brattleboro-Hinsdale bridge project.
