The Town of Brattleboro’s curbside solid waste collection program will transition to a new service model beginning Monday, July 6, 2026. Casella Waste Systems will collect trash and recycling, while the Town will manage curbside compost collection through its municipal compost program.

“For users of the system, not much will change,” said Pete Lynch, Assistant Director of the Department of Public Works. “Residents can expect the same reliable service they’ve come to count on. The biggest change is that recycling will move from weekly pickup to every other week.”

Trash collection will continue every other week, while compost will continue to be collected weekly. Below is an overview of the program beginning July 6.

Trash Collection Remains Unchanged

The Town’s Pay-As-You-Throw program remains the same. Trash will continue to be collected every other week using official Town bags, with no changes to household collection days.

Recycling Pickup Frequency is Changing

Recycling will change from weekly pickup to every other week. Trash and recycling will be collected on the same day, following an “A Week” or “B Week” schedule. To confirm your collection schedule, visit Brattleboro.gov/trash.

During the week of July 6–10, A Week residents will have trash, recycling and compost collected, while B Week residents will only have compost collected.

Residents may continue using their current recycling bins but are asked to label the bin “Recycling.” Additional bins are available for $15 from the Finance Department (Suite 111) at the Municipal Center.230 Main Street, Brattleboro, VT 05301

New Weekly Compost Service

The Town is launching a municipally managed curbside compost collection program. Compost will be collected weekly on the same day as trash and recycling.

The Town recommends using a green, 13-gallon compost container, available for $30 from the Finance Department, or a personal container clearly labeled “Compost.”

Active users of the compost program are encouraged to register their address using an online form available at Brattleboro.gov/trash. This will help the Town improve service to residents and track rates of participation and waste diversion. Registration is encouraged but not required to participate.

Residents with questions or who need assistance filling out the compost form are encouraged to contact the Department of Public Works at 802-254-4255.
