Will there be a Brattleboro Citizens’ Breakfast in July?

The longer answer: The next “Brattleboro Citizens’ Breakfast” will take place on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Gibson Aiken Center, downstairs, hosted by Senior Meals. Doors open at 7:30am.

At their next Tuesday meeting, the Brattleboro Selectboard will begin to spend big money on the Police-Fire Facility project with an $800,000 contract for architectural services and $290,000 for property on Church Street on the agenda.
The board will also form a committee to look at skating rink options, discuss the town website as well as local hiring, hire Lane Construction ofNorthfield, MA for paving, regulate food carts, and more. You can bring up other matters not on the agenda during public participation. Watch on BCTV or attend in person, and read all about it here afterwards.
At the Brattleboro Selectboard’s July 16, 2013 meeting, the Board will consider for adoption a revised job description for the Town Manager’s position, and a job listing/ad for the soon to be vacant Brattleboro Town Manager position. and are now available for consideration and review by the public in anticipation of the July 16 Selectboard meeting.

The private drive into the Brattleboro Country Club from Upper Dummerston Road was recently named Senator Gannett Drive. A dedication ceremony is scheduled on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at 12:00 noon at the Brattleboro Country Club. Governor Shumlin will be present for the dedication ceremony. The public is encouraged to attend.

Two bits of interesting business news today in Brattleboro.
First, it’s official, the Brooks House team has closed on the deal to finance the renovations and restoration of the historic downtown building. They should be given awards for being able to come up with the complex interconnection of financing ($24 million) that is making it possible. Work should start soon and a groundbreaking is scheduled for July 17.
Second, the rumors some have heard are true. Brown & Roberts has been sold. The Putnam family ends 40 years of family ownership with the sale.
The Brattleboro Tree Advisory Committee will hold a special meeting on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at 9:00am at the intersection of Clark and Canal Streets (near Agape Church). The Committee will discuss plantings in that area.

The Brattleboro ADA Advisory Committee will meet on Friday, July 12, 2013 at 10:00am at the Marlboro College Graduate Center in the VCIL conference room.
The Brattleboro Arts Committee will meet on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 4:00pm in the Selectboard meeting room at the Municipal Center.
The Brattleboro Representative Town Meeting Finance Committee will meet on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at 4:30pm in the Hanna Cosman meeting room at the Municipal Center.
The state offices currently located on Linden Street will be moving back to their permanent home at 232 Main Street in downtown Brattleboro in late July. The offices on Linden Street will be closed at that time.
Transport of equipment will begin on Friday July 26 and will happen over the course of the weekend. Offices located in the building include:
the Vermont Department of Labor;
the Vermont Department of Health;
the Department for Children and Families Economic Services and Family Services Divisions;
the Agency of Human Services Field Services Division;
and the Department of Vermont Health Access Chronic Care initiative.

At Tuesday’s long meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard the new solar farm was explained in detail and public support for the project appears to be substantial. The board also approved a “quick fix” approach to ice rink repairs in order to be able to open the season on schedule. It also gives them more time to consider long-term options for the facility.
The Fire Department presented an overview of their operations, a store on Guilford Road was again denied a liquor permit, tax rates were set, Patrick Moreland was named the interim Town Manager when Barb Sondag officially resigns, and much more was packed into the over three hour meeting.
A Call for CEDS Projects
The following is a call for the submission of project proposals to be included in the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for this Windham region. While no monetary awards will directly result from these proposals, their inclusion in this document (the “CEDS”) will likely shape the areas where available federal funds may be targeted in the future. To quote from the :

In observance of the July 4th holiday, all Town offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, 2013, with the exception of emergency services.
Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on July 4. All other violations, including extended parking will be enforced.
Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on July 4, 2013.
Does anyone know what has happened in Brattleboro today? We’ve lost electricity twice today. Once around 5:45 am and again at 4:45pm. I saw some telephone’and power trucks’over by Linden Street and it looked like a line was down. It is odd to lose power a total of now three times this passing week.
The Brattleboro Selectboard would like to know what you think about the proposed solar farm along I-91. They’ve carved out time during Tuesday’s meeting to listen to your ideas.
If you go, you’ll also be able to participate in discussions of the skating rink compressor, local hiring, the town website, the Town Manager search process, various grants and permits, and other issues.

Many cars (at least 5) in the Pine Street area are were spray painted on Wed. night this week between 9:30-11pm, they also vanalized the granite pillars leading to Morningside Cemetery. More disturbing than that is the racial slur sprayed on a house on Pine St. the same night. I doubt it was directed at the home owner, as I think the house is vacant. What a shame to our neighborhood and community.
