Bearing Witness, a retrospective exhibit of watercolors, pastels, and prints, by Brattleboro artist Karen Becker, is currently on view at the All Souls Church in the West Village Meeting House., through June 30. Becker’s artwork focuses on the beauty she finds in nature, and she represents the animals and trees that are all bearing witness to the devastation of climate change.
The public is invited to an artist’s reception on Saturday, June 10, from 3 – 5 pm. All Souls Church is located at 29 South St, West Brattleboro. The exhibit is open Sundays, 12 – 2 pm, or by appointment (802-257-4710).

Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts is pleased to present an Artist Talk with Deidre Scherer on Saturday, October 27th at 5pm. Her current exhibit “Human Textures” will be showing at MGFA through November 18, which showcases the artist’s paper and fabric weavings, as well as collaborative vessels with artist Jackie Abrams.
Pioneering in the medium of thread-on-layered-fabric, Scherer’s collages, both in fabric and paper media, engage the viewer with the tenderness of being human. The Rhode Island School of Design honored Scherer with their 2010 Alumni Association Award for Artistic Achievement “for the innovative medium of textile art she has developed, and for her thought-provoking investigations of our society’s views of aging, reflections on life, death, family relationships and the welfare of future generations.” Scherer has exhibited in hundreds of shows since 1979, and has been featured in several galleries nationwide including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Heller Museum in NYC.
Take a break from your work week and join us at The Drawing Studio for a cup of coffee and some time to draw, paint and read. The brook runs just outside our windows and the art library is full of inspiration. There will be beautiful still life arrangements to draw from, benches to bring outside if you want to work from nature and good instruction if you need it. Mostly there will be coffee, quiet and materials to let you come into relationship with your simple and creative self.

The Drawing Studio in Brattleboro is offering a variety of creative opportunities this Summer; classes in Life Drawing, Drawing Basics and an immersive weeklong workshop in Color and Painting. There are also weekly drop-in life drawing sessions and Open Studio hours for independent and guided work. Jason Alden is a skilled and attentive instructor who will meet you at any level of experience, from absolute beginner to long-time painter.
This weekend workshop will help you to draw anywhere you are with more curiosity and enjoyment. The world and nature are in constant communication with us. There are ways of seeing and drawing that can move this communication into a conversation. When we see something not only as its object name i.e. brook, but also as it’s qualities, flowing, cold, reflective, dark, murmuring, the brook becomes fuller, more dimensional and we have many more ways to creatively interact with it. Also, our drawings become more personal and particular to our senses and our experience of things.
Open Studio at the Drawing Studio begins this week! We will have drop in hours every Monday through Thursday. Our full schedule is here:
We have all drawing materials (and watercolor and gouache) available. You may work independently or with as much instruction as you need. The Open Studio is supported on a donation basis and all are welcome.
