FREE award-winning parenting class, Guiding Good Choices, Wednesdays, from Oct. 2-30.

Guiding Good Choices is a free, five-session workshop that aids parents and/or caregivers of students in grades 4-8. The course covers how to set clear guidelines with both positive and negative consequences, how to control and express anger constructively, promote family bonds, and prepare kids with “refusal” skills for that time down the road when trouble may tempt them.

Attention Young Crafters/Bakers/Gardener/Creators! This Saturday, September 7th, is KIDS DAY at the Brattleboro Farmers’ Market! Kids are vendors, too– bring things you’ve made yourself, but no cookies from mixes or craft kits, please. The Market is open from 9 to 2, outdoors on Rte 9 in West Brattleboro. Produce is beyond bountiful now, with late summer melons and peaches, tomatoes and peppers, epplants and garlic, plus fall crops like fresh apples.

There’s something for everyone at the market– from gorgeous crafts, globe-spanning cuisine, humanely raised meats, artisan cheeses, even local fruit wines and hard cider! Picnic tables, children’s play area, and ample parking make the market a really nice destination on a Saturday morning.

Asian Cultural Center of Vermont (ACCVT) presents the 15th annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (Zhongqiu Jie) which is celebrated in China, Korea, and Vietnam. After Lunar New Year, this is the second most important festival of the year.

This is a traditional time for families to gather and give thanks for the harvest and for harmonious unions. Offerings may be made to Chang’e, the Moon Goddess of Immortality. This is the festival for carrying lanterns and sharing mooncakes. Come celebrate this harvest festival with crafts, stories, songs, food, t’ai chi, martial arts, and the rope tug. Then watch the harvest moon rise. The celebration will start with a pot-luck.

The Strolling of the Heifers had good weather, to our surprise, and the sunshine resulted in some nice parade pictures, taken by my brother Bill, who is visiting on vacation.

On Saturday May 18^th from 5 to 9 PM, Green Mountain Camp will be celebrating 96 years of memories at their reunion for friends and alumnae! Whether you are 9 or 90, there will be pictures, songs and stories to remind you of your magical time at Green Mountain Camp.

Come see what has changed at the camp and what has stayed the same. It’s a time to reconnect with old friends and make new ones as you enjoy a delicious spaghetti dinner, s’mores, and singing around the campfire. During the evening there will be guest appearances by past GMC directors. Tickets are $10 for the evening to benefit the scholarship fund.

Each Summer for years, Peggy Longueil directed the program and we all thought she would continue forever. When Peggy died, it was our good fortune that Juanita Lane volunteered to keep the Summer program alive. 

Through the Summer Program, neighbor kids have a place to be active and enjoy planned activities, including movies, swimming, and even did a marvelous job painting a mural at the Brattleboro Transportation Center! 

Saturday, May 18th, the Brattleboro Farmers’ Market hosts Kids’ Day, and new-to-market talent Xopo from 11-1. Kids can be vendors, too! Please bring handmade items and your own table, no cookies from mixes or craft kits, please!

Xopo plays traditional tunes of the Balkans on a variety of instruments including accordion, trombone, clarinet, drums and an array of stringed instruments. Haunting love songs, lively dance tunes and surprising rhythms create a diverse and entrancing musical experience.

If you’ve ever wondered what Green Mountain Camp is all about, here’s your chance! Or if you just miss the place and want to see it again and see some of your camp friends – this day was made for you!

There’ll be fun art activities, cotton candy, popcorn, music, tours of the camp and meet the staff for 2013. There will also be a special gift for those who sign up and pay for camp at the Open House. Sometimes it’s hard to know the difference between normal teen behavior and the warning signs of alcohol use. Many teens act out and test boundaries. It’s what they do. gives parents and caregivers examples of sudden changes that could be signs of underage alcohol use, and how to connect with other parents and advocates for help.

Parenting does not come with a handbook but Parenting Teens Wisely does. In an effort to promote positive communications between parents, caregivers and teens, the Brattleboro Area Prevention
Coalition (BAPC) is offering the Parenting Teens Wisely workshop, on Tuesday, April 9 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Putney Central School Library.

This free three hour workshop teaches parents skills and techniques to help them better understand and deal with children ages 10-19. Participants will learn how to problem-solve and encourage cooperation with their teen and learn to develop fair and effective discipline skills. 

Friends of Music at Guilford has been gifting the Guilford Central School with a Music Enrichment Program for the past five seasons, with partial funding from the Max Y. Seaton Trust. The balance of the budget is raised by a dinner and concert evening in a Brattleboro venue featuring the program’s residency artists and also, for the past two seasons, by a Spaghetti Supper held at the school.

This year’s pasta supper is set for Thursday, March 21, from 5 to 7 p.m.; the school is at 374 School Rd., Guilford Center.

The menu includes pasta with a gluten-free option, a vegetarian sauce made from scratch, homemade meatballs for carnivores, green salad, bread both plain and garlic, beverages, desserts and a sundae bar.
