Brattleboro Senior Center Temporary Closure

The Brattleboro Recreation and Parks would like to announce that The Brattleboro Senior Center will be closed to both the congregate meals and all activities that occur in the Senior Center due to kitchen floor replacement September 7th-15th.  During this time activities such as Painting classes and Tai Chi will still run in their normal time and location on various other floors of the building, please use the front entrance of the building during this time frame. 

Town of Brattleboro Finance Director and Treasurer John O’Connor To Retire

Town of Brattleboro Finance Director and Treasurer John O’Connor has announced his intention to retire in October. 

O’Connor has been the Town’s Finance Director and Treasurer since July 7, 2011. During his tenure, the Town has received 7 years of “clean” audited financial reports with no findings requiring corrective action. In addition to that stellar record of financial reporting, O’Connor successfully managed $32.5 million in bond funds from a variety of sources for the wastewater treatment plant upgrade project; $13 million of bond funds for the Police Fire Facilities construction project; and millions of dollars more in Federal, State, and private grants for a wide variety of Town programs and projects, including $1.6 million in FEMA grant money for 39 separate recovery projects after Tropical Storm Irene. 

Marlboro Road Water Main Break

The Department of Public Works received an alert of a high water flow on Wednesday July 24, 2019 at 10pm.

Utilities Crews responded to Route 9 in West Brattleboro for a reported water main break.

The crew determined the break was on a 16 inch water main.

Brattleboro Reminds Residents to Keep All Sidewalks Clear

 The Town of Brattleboro reminds all property owners, residents, and business operators to keep sidewalks clear and free from any obstructions. This is necessary to maintain open and safe use of all sidewalks by all people, and it is especially important for people using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers. 

Town ordinances require that owners keep vegetation from encroaching on or over sidewalks. Residents also are required to keep garbage cans, recycling bins, and compost containers off of sidewalks and to bring those items back onto their property (away from curb) after Triple-T has collected the contents at curbside.

Brattleboro Selectboard Special Meeting – Pending or Probable Civil Litigation or Prosecution

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Thursday, July 25, 2019, at 2:00pm in the Selectboard Meeting Room at the Municipal Center.  It is anticipated that the Board will enter into executive session at 2:00pm to discuss pending or probable civil litigation or prosecution to which the public body is or may be a party, and then reconvene in public to adjourn.  No further business will be discussed.

Selectboard Meeting Notes – Rental Housing, Day Work, Sustainability

Brattleboro Selectboard

The Brattleboro Selectboard held their only meeting of July. Despite objections from many landlords, the board approved a new rental housing inspection program, and despite numerous statements of support they put off deciding on how best to deal with issues of sustainability.

New tax rates for FY20 were set, a 3-month day work pilot program was funded, Groundworks received $100,000 for housing, and more.

Brattleboro’s new “Work Today” program for day labor will be explained and partially funded at Tuesday’s meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard. Youth Services is taking the lead on this attempt to employ members of the community that have trouble finding steady work.

The board will take up the question of whether to create a Sustainability Officer position within town government, enact a rental housing inspection program, the town pool needs more repairs, tax rates will be set, goals will be reviewed, the library will get grants to help with local history, we’ll buy another pick-up truck, goals will be reviewed, committee members will be appointed, and more.

You can bring up other matters not on the agenda during public participation.

In observance of the July 4th holiday, all Town offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, 2019, with the exception of emergency services. 

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Thursday, July 4. All other violations will be enforced.

The Brattleboro Selectboard took up a full agenda, though with only three members present, they themselves were not quite full.

The big discussion of the evening centered on landlords and a new rental housing inspection system soon to take effect, but the exciting news came during public participation when it was announced that a day work program, legal and with dignity, will soon be getting started.
