    EducationOn Tuesday, September 14, at 7pm in the meeting room of the Brook's Memorial Library in downtown Brattleboro, a representative of the Better Business Bureau will empower undergraduates with the best debt management techniques. The BBB will teach undergraduates how to be responsible with credit cards, set a realistic budget, understand financial aid choices, and vigilantly track credit scores.

    Better Business Bureau is a non-profit public service organization which provides free business BBB Reliability Reports, BBB Charity Reports, and other valuable information to the public. With more than 407,000 Accredited Businesses, BBB is one of the largest business member supported public organizations in the world.

    EducationThe Brooks Memorial Library has added Mango, an interactive language learning program, to its online resources collection. Mango offers basic and intermediate language courses in Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish, plus basic instruction in thirteen additional languages, such as Arabic, Hindi, Irish, Korean, Pashto, and Tagalog. ESL courses are also included, with in-depth English instruction for native speakers of Spanish, Polish, and Portuguese, plus basic instruction for native speakers of many other languages.

    EducationThe Sierra Club just published a list of their 100 "coolest schools" and Vermont had three in the top 20.

    It began with a survey to figure out which were America's greenest schools.

    Campuses were rated on their energy supply and commitment to sustainability. Efficiency, food, academics, purchasing, transportation, waste management, administration, investments and other initiatives were examined.

    EducationWalter Hendricks, once known as the “Johnny Appleseed” of small colleges, had a dream in 1951. That dream was Windham College, a small liberal arts school beginning in the basement of his home in Putney and growing to almost 900 students at its peak.

    In December, 1978 that dream came to an end. Windham had closed its doors after graduating approximately 2500 students. Many of those students who passed through its doors remained in Vermont. As alums, friends, aculty and staff, our college was gone and our unique family broken apart.

    But that hasn’t stopped us finding each other and gathering in Putney from time to time to share old memories and hold reunions. Over the years we have had satellite reunions all over the country and from time to time close to the halls we once walked.

    EducationMarlboro College Graduate School will offer a one-day workshop for teachers and instructional technology professionals about integrating Google Applications into learning environments on Friday, August 6.

    A free overview of Google Apps for Education will begin the seminar, after which registered participants will take part in two hands-on workshops geared toward beginner and intermediate-level usage of Google's offerings for education. A brown-bag lunch presentation will show 50 real examples of how teachers are integrating Google Apps in their classrooms.

This August, a group of English teachers from Dominican Republic will be attending language and culture classes at the SIT campus as well as exploring the local area. The home-stay has always been a key component of many of our educational programs, and allows students to experience American culture firsthand.

    To meet the needs of as many people as possible, Continuing Education offers a wide variety of courses taught in different formats and at different times.

    Those interested in taking undergraduate courses can select from classes taught at night in 39 different areas. Daytime courses are offered in 43 different areas. Professionals in the education field can earn graduate credit this fall to begin a master’s or post-master’s program or make progress toward recertification. Two-hour-long courses taught after work focus on using technology in the classroom.
