Slovenian Wins Harris Hill Ski Jump

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — An 18-year-old Slovenian bested two dozen of the world’s best up-and-coming ski jumpers Sunday to win the Harris Hill Ski Jump’s annual namesake Fred Harris Memorial Tournament.

Blaz Pavlic broke the hill’s long-distance record with a 104-meter jump in front of a crowd of several thousand spectators, with Brian Wallace, 23, of St. Paul, Minn., placing second and Zak Silih, 21, of Slovenia third.

“The headwind helped me,” Pavlic said of his historic leap. “It lifted me up, and then I just said, ‘Go for it.’”

The nearly century-old event featured athletes from eight states, Austria and Slovenia shooting off New England’s only Olympic-size venue at speeds of 60 mph before soaring more than 300 feet in the air.

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — An 18-year-old Slovenian bested 25 of the world’s best up-and-coming ski jumpers Saturday on the first day of this weekend’s Harris Hill Ski Jump.

Blaz Pavlic won the Pepsi Challenge in front of a crowd of several thousand spectators, with Brian Wallace, 23, of St. Paul, Minn., second and Zak Silih, 21, of Slovenia third.

The nearly century-old event is featuring athletes from eight states, Austria and Slovenia shooting off New England’s only Olympic-size venue at speeds of 60 mph before soaring more than 300 feet in the air.

One hometown jumper, Brattleboro’s Spencer Knickerbocker, not only is competing but also is helping the snowmaking crew maintain the hill.

“It’s perfect,” the 24-year-old Knickerbocker said of the jump’s condition.

Below is information that might be helpful to know for March 7th local elections.

Attached is a sample ballot from each of Brattleboro’s three districts. All districts’ ballots are the same except for Town Meeting Members for each district. Absentee ballots are currently available at the Town Clerk’s Office and may be requested until 5:00 pm on Monday, March 6.

Polling place for all three districts in Brattleboro is the Selectboard Meeting Room, second floor of the Municipal Center, 230 Main Street, Room 212, from 7:00 am until 7:00 pm on March 7, 2017.

The entire back parking lot at the Municipal Center will be reserved for voters on election day. There are handicapped parking spaces close to the back entrance.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of February 20th

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Monday, February 20th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM (I-91 will remain open). Traffic conditions on both I-91 and through the town will be monitored closely throughout the day. Should traffic congestion become an issue, the ramps may be re-opened until traffic conditions improve. This will be managed actively throughout the day until peak traffic volumes have passed.

Snow Removal From Brattleboro Streets Thursday Evening

Snow and ice will be removed from the streets in the downtown area this evening. Streets will include, but not limited to the following: Elliot, Walnut, Harris, Canal, and Western Ave. If time permits, additional clean up on Main Street may also occur

Brattleboro Presidents Day Closings

In observance of Presidents’ Day, all Brattleboro Town offices will be closed on Monday, February 20, 2017, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Sunday and Monday, February 19 and February 20. All other violations will be enforced.

Brooks Memorial Library will be closed on Sunday and Monday, February 19 and February 20, 2017.

Trash, recycling, and composting are NOT affected by the holiday. Collections will take place on the normal schedule

Town of Brattleboro Volunteer Energy Coordinator Position Available

On February 13, 2017, the Brattleboro Selectboard announced a vacancy for the volunteer Town Energy Coordinator position. The position is defined in the Town Charter as follows: “Town Energy Coordinator: One 1-year term. The energy coordinator, created by the Vermont Legislature, reviews energy-related material received by the town and advises the town on energy conservation measures. S/he reviews as needed.”

The Energy Coordinator’s job description is as follows:

This person is appointed by the Selectboard and is supervised by the Energy Committee.

In working with the Energy Committee, the Volunteer Town Energy Coordinator gets involved with energy conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other energy-related matters.

Harris Hill Ski Jump Set For Saturday and Sunday, February 18 and 19, 2017

Pets Welcome on Entire Vermonter Route

Amtrak announced the expansion of its pets program on the Vermonter, allowing more options for customers to travel with their pets. Small dogs and cats can now join their owners on the entire Vermonter route from Washington D.C. to St. Albans, VT, as long as the trip duration is no more than seven hours (see requirements). Previously, pets were not able to travel on the Connecticut portions of the route.

More than 15,000 pets and their human companions have traveled around the country since the program launched on the Northeast Corridor in October 2015. Record ridership was achieved for the month of July with more than 2,000 pets and owners traveling onboard. The program has also generated more than $1 million in revenue since its inception.

Christian Sands to Perform an Overview of Jazz-trio Piano History at the Vermont Jazz Center on Saturday, February 11th.

The Vermont Jazz Center welcomes the Christian Sands Trio to the stage on February 11, 2017 at 8:00 PM in eager anticipation of a guided tour through the colorful and exciting history of jazz piano. Sands is one of the top, young pianists of our time. Mentored personally by Dr. Billy Taylor, influenced by Barry Harris, Hank Jones and Oscar Peterson and apprenticed in the hot seat of Christian McBride’s trio, Christian Sands’ playing is steeped in the tradition–but not limited to–its constraints. He is comfortable playing old-school stride piano like Fats Waller, stretching out in a post-bop setting like McCoy Tyner or re-arranging a hip-hop anthem by Drake. Sands notes that “My music is about teaching the way of jazz and keeping it alive.” He will be performing with long-time associates Russell Hall on acoustic bass and Jerome Jennings on drums.
