The Act 46 Study Committee will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at the Vernon Elementary School, Vernon.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of January 24

I-91

To reduce congestion on I-91, both Exit 3 on ramps will be closed on Sunday, January 24 and Sunday, January 31, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. I-91 will remain open.

Weekend closures of the Exit 3 on ramps will continue each weekend through the end of February. The closures will be on Sunday afternoons; except that on three-day weekends, they will be on Monday.

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

January 2016 is Rotary Awareness Month

Rotary International, along with its various clubs throughout the world, has established January as Rotary Awareness Month. 



Greg Worden, Brattleboro Rotary Club president, said, “A lot of people don’t know what Rotary International does. We want to get the word out.”



One of the biggest focuses of the organization is working to eliminate polio. The club has worked closely with World Health Organization (WHO) and the Gates Foundation in this effort. 



“We pretty much have polio eliminated except for two or three countries,” Worden said. 



Brattleboro Rotary Club Bestows 4th Annual “Norm Kuebler Four-Way Test” on The Works Bakery Cafe

The Brattleboro Rotary Club bestowed the fourth annual “Norm Kuebler Four-Way Test Award” upon The Works Bakery Cafe at the club’s weekly meeting on January 14, 2015.

The award honors the late Norm Kuebler, who was a past president of the club, a local businessman, and a longtime community volunteer. Kuebler died unexpectedly at the age of 63 in April 2010.

Kuebler was a strong proponent of Rotary International’s code of ethics, called the “Four-Way Test,” which asks, “Of the things we think, say, or do: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?”

In this spirit, the Brattleboro Rotary Club each year recognizes a local business that best exemplifies these values.

Harris Hill Ski Jumping Competition Set For February 20 and 21

SAVE THE DATE: HARRIS HILL SKI JUMPING COMPETITION SET FOR FEB. 20 AND 21

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — The nation’s best young ski jumpers are set to fly off New England’s only Olympic-size hill Feb. 20 and 21 at the annual Harris Hill Ski Jump in Brattleboro, Vt.

The nearly century-old competition will feature athletes from the United States, Canada and Europe who will compete on a 90-meter hill that’s one of just six of its size in the country.

Since its start in 1922, the annual event attracts several thousand spectators who watch watch jumpers soar up to 300 feet at speeds up to 60 mph.

Youth Services Hosting Monthly Group for Parents and Caregivers of LGBTQ Youth

Brattleboro, VT–Youth Services is launching a support group for parents and caregivers of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning (LGBTQ) youth in the Windham County region, on Thursday, January 28 from 5:30-7 p.m., in collaboration with Green Mountain Crossroads, a local nonprofit dedicated to connecting rural LGBTQ people. The first meeting of Joining Our Youth (JOY) group, will be at Youth Services at 32 Walnut St. in Brattleboro, VT.

Vermont Jazz Center Presents: Bobby Broom Trio

The Vermont Jazz Center welcomes the Bobby Broom Trio on Saturday January 23rd at 8:00 PM. Broom is Chicago’s leading guitarist and, due to his commitment to teaching and his ability to draw crowds in Chicago’s best listening rooms, it is a rare treat to catch him on the east coast. He will perform with his long-standing trio of Dennis Carroll on bass and Makaya McCraven on drums who have each, respectively, played with Broom for 20 and 5 years. The trio will travel from Chicago to Vermont for this “one-off” concert with no other east coast gigs listed on their itinerary.

Broom stands out as one of the best guitarists in the world and has won the Downbeat Critic’s poll as Best Guitarist for 3 of the last 4 years. His music is both intelligent and soulful at the same time. He is a deep listener and an arranger who understands the power of space. He was “the first guitarist to be asked by Art Blakey to be a part of his group,” he loves standards, and can funk-out with the best of them. He has a beautiful tone, an extensive vocabulary of chordal voicings, a deep connection to the blues and a grooving rhythmical sensibility.

Parking Lot Snow Removal in Brattleboro

The Town of Brattleboro would like to remind everyone that the snow emergency ban is in effect.

Snow and ice will be removed from the parking lots in the downtown area this evening Jan 16.

Parked vehicles in the downtown parking lots must be removed by 10:30pm or they will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Sanders Announces Winners of State of the Union Essay Contest

BURLINGTON, Vt., Jan. 15 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today announced the winners of his annual State of the Union essay contest for Vermont high school students. Nearly 800 students, a record number, from 39 high schools participated in the contest this year.

A panel of five Vermont teachers served as volunteer judges and selected Meredith Holbrook, a senior at Milton High School, as the winner of the contest. In her essay, Holbrook focused on the need to address domestic economic issues, such as hunger, homelessness and strengthening Social Security in the United States.

Bruce, Barry, Alan and Kelly Stockwell’s music spans traditional and progressive styles, but their trademark acoustic sound features new singer/songwriter material recast with banjo, alternative rhythms and three-part harmonies. They cover straight ahead bluegrass songs, finger picked acoustic guitar ballads, full tilt breakdowns and traditional mandolin tunes mixed in with more unusual fare – Americana melodies riding world beat grooves and Celtic, jazzy, even neo-classical instrumentals.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 may be reduced to a single lane intermittently, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

From Clay to Table Opening at The Putney School

Three local ceramic artists—Rob Cartelli, Heta Hilsdon, and Todd Wahlstrom—open their collective show on Friday, January 15 from 7-9 p.m. (snow date January 22) in the Michael S. Currier Center at The Putney School. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Naomi Lindenfeld, the ceramics teacher at The Putney School, curated the show. Her vision led her to display the finely-crafted functional pottery on furniture rather than gallery pedestals. That way viewers can get much more of a sense of how one would live with the pots on a daily basis.

Brattleboro Closures on Martin Luther King Day

In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, all Brattleboro Town offices will be closed on Monday, January 18, 2016, with the exception of emergency services.

Parking is free at all metered spaces and in the pay-and-display lots on Monday, January 18. All other violations will be enforced.

Sanders Announces Finalists of State of the Union Essay Contest

BURLINGTON, Vt., Jan. 11 – With President Barack Obama set to deliver his State of the Union address tomorrow evening, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) today announced 20 finalists in his annual State of the Union essay contest for Vermont high school students. A record number of Vermont high schools and students participated in Sanders’ contest this year.

This year, 799 students from 39 Vermont high schools wrote essays of 250 words to 500 words detailing their own view of the state of the union. That is a substantial increase from last year when 454 students from 27 schools wrote essays for the senator’s contest.
