The Agency of Commerce and Community Development (ACCD) and the Windham County Advisory Council are pleased to announce the relaunch of the . 

ACCD has worked closely with state and regional partners to redesign the program to ensure greater local and regional participation in the process, simplify the application process – especially for businesses – and improve communication about the program to the region.  The regional partners have formed a consisting of BDCC, WRC, SeVEDS, SBDC, ACCD, municipalities with designated downtowns – Brattleboro, Wilmington, Rockingham – plus Vernon.

State Rep. Valerie Stewart Serving Lunches at Living Memorial Park to Area Youth

July 23rd and 30th, Vermont State Representative Valerie Stewart will be at Living Memorial Park serving lunches to area youth as part of the Windham Southeast Supervisory Union’s Summer Food Service Program. The WSESU runs the Summer Food Program to ensure that children and teens have access to healthy food when school is not is session. Any child, 18 or younger, can find a free breakfast, lunch or dinner at various sites around Brattleboro or Guilford. Anyone can text ‘FOOD’ to 877-877 to find the site closest to them.

Sanders Introduces Bill for $15-an-Hour Minimum Wage

WASHINGTON, July 22 – Addressing hundreds of low-wage workers who have gone on strike for a living wage, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said legislation he introduced today would raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour.

“It is a national disgrace that millions of full-time workers are living in poverty and millions more are forced to work two or three jobs just to pay their bills,” Sanders said at the outdoor rally near the Capitol. “In the year 2015, a job must lift workers out of poverty, not keep them in it. The current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour is a starvation wage and must be raised to a living wage.”

The Marlboro Alliance Summer Sale takes place this weekend July 25 – 26. This is a town-wide, two-day sale. Located in Marlboro, VT town center, just off Route 9. There will be two buildings chock-full of great stuff & clothing.

Twilight on the Tavern Lawn Presents Cantrip on Sunday, July 26

Twilight Music continues its 13th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 26 with an evening of high energy Scottish music by Cantrip. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 23. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at The Putney Community Center at 10 Christian Square in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.

Longtime Library Director Announces Retirement – Brattleboro’s Public Library to Seek New Leader

Brattleboro VT – The Brattleboro Town Manager and the Brooks Memorial Library Board of Trustees jointly announced today that Jerry Carbone, Library Director of Brooks Memorial Library, has submitted a letter of intention to retire in December 2015.

Carbone, 64, will be stepping down after 37 years at the venerable institution, 22 as director. He is the 13th library professional to hold the post at the library that bears the name of George J. Brooks, who built and gave the original library building to the citizens of his adopted town.

Local residents will have a chance to learn about becoming a nationally Board Certified Coach (BCC) as The Synthesis Center introduces its psychosynthesis classes in Brattleboro this summer. On Wednesday, July 22nd at 6:30 p.m., there will be a free presentation at the The Synthesis Center’s regional office at 73 Main Street in Brattleboro. A follow up session is scheduled for August 23rd.

Psychosynthesis is distinctive for blending Western psychology with Eastern spiritual traditions, and it has long been applied in the fields of counseling, education and the helping professions as a tool for self development. More recently, the Center has introduced this method to the emerging field of life coaching, offering tools and applied practices for creating life change.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of July 19

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

Night work adjacent to Route 30 will continue this week, but will not affect traffic.

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of July 12

On Sunday, July 12, the Southbound lane of I-91 between Exits 3 and 2 and the Exit 3 on-ramps will be closed to all vehicles from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM to make it possible to conduct a routine bridge inspection. This time period was selected because it is the period of lowest traffic volume during the daylight hours needed to conduct the inspection. Southbound traffic will be routed to Exit 1, and Northbound traffic attempting to use the Exit 3 on ramp will be routed north on Route 5 to Exit 4. Officers will be on hand to control traffic. I-91 Northbound will remain open.

Senators Call on FCC to Probe Cable, Broadband Prices

WASHINGTON, July 10 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and three colleagues today asked the Federal Communications Commission to investigate “ridiculous prices” for cable and broadband services.

“Consumers in our country have little or no choice in their Internet and cable provider,” Sanders wrote in the letter to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler. “As a result, these companies are able to charge ridiculous prices and add hidden fees onto a customer’s bill,” he added in the letter also signed by Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Al Franken (D-Minn.). “It’s no wonder the American public rank these providers last in customer satisfaction,” the senators said.

NEA “Our Town” Grant Screening Committee Application Deadline Extended To July 16, 2015

The Brattleboro Selectboard is accepting applications for interested people to become a part of an ad hoc Screening Committee to conduct the initial screening of proposals submitted by artists who apply for funding through the Town’s NEA “Our Town” grant. The Screening Committee will review all application materials submitted by all artists and will recommend to the Selectboard a group of finalists. The Screening Committee’s work will occur during the week of July 27-31. The Selectboard will consider the Screening Committee’s recommendations on August 4. The only minimum requirements for service on the Steering Committee are residence in Brattleboro and/or prior experience in judging artistic ability and experience.
