Composer and pianist Eugene Uman and his Convergence Project returns for his seventh annual Vermont Jazz Center concert with a special night of high-energy original jazz compositions based on traditional Colombian music on Saturday, June 6th at 8 PM. Other members of the Convergence Project Joining Uman will be Michael Zsoldos, on saxophone, Jeff Galindo on trombone, Stomu Takeishi on electric bass, Satoshi Takeishi on drums and Adam O’Farrill on trumpet, who was the third place winner in this year’s Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.
The Brattleboro VFW Post #1034 will be closed due to construction Monday, June 8th.
The Brattleboro Arts Committee will hold a special meeting on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 9:30am in the Hanna Cosman meeting room at the Municipal Center. It is anticipated that the Committee will take recess in the morning and reconvene the meeting at 1:00pm.

The Brattleboro VFW Post #1034 will be hosting their annual family outing Sunday, July 26th. A $25 ticket will enter you for a chance to win money, with a grand prize of $1000. The meal will be grilled steak, baked potato, corn on the cob, and a roll. The $25 cost will also cover entry to the dance featuring the Colt 45 Band.
For $12, you get a meal and entry to the dance. A $5 charge will be offered for those wanting to enter the dance only. Burgers and hot dogs will also be for sale.
Sanders Cites GAO Study in Push to Expand Social Security
WASHINGTON, June 2 – A new study prepared for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) found that more than half of all American households with someone 55 or older have no retirement savings.
The study was requested by Sanders, the lead sponsor of legislation to increase Social Security benefits.
“This report makes it clear that there is a retirement crisis in America today. At a time when half of all older workers have no retirement savings, we need to expand, not cut, Social Security benefits so that every American can retire with dignity,” Sanders said.
I-91
Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.
Route 30
Night work adjacent to Route 30 will continue this week, but will not affect traffic.
The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Twilight Music begins its 13th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, May 31 with with an evening of hard driving, house rocking, in your face blues by The Chris Kleeman Band. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 23. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at The Putney Community Center at 10 Christian Square in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.
Brattleboro Community Radio is hosting a concert on June 6 starting at 5pm at the Stone Church, 3 Grove St/210 Main St, to benefit the station. Local Vermont based reggae band, Heirloom Seeds will headline the show other acts include: WVEW DJ Selector D, The River Bandits (funk, soul, fusion, etc.), Tara Dente (folk, singer song-writer), The Ditrani Brothers (old tyme Americana) and Sara Wallis.(folk-singer songwriter)

Brattleboro Housing Partnerships and Housing Vermont are pleased to announce that demolition and environmental remediation work will begin at 30 Fairground Rd. on Thursday, May 28.
The work will focus on demolition of the block building toward the back of the lot, removal of materials still on the site and preparation of the entire area for construction. It is anticipated that the work will take at least two weeks.
Construction of the Red Clover Commons building and site will commence shortly after the demolition work is finished. The construction will take approximately 12 months. Once completed, residents from Melrose Terrace will begin to be moved to the new development.

BRATTLEBORO, VT – Before a crowd of roughly 100 people gathered in the Brooks House atrium on Friday morning, Morningside Shelter and the Brattleboro Area Drop In Center publicly announced that they are merging to form a single organization under a new name: Groundworks Collaborative.
The Boards of Directors formally agreed to the merger at a joint board meeting on Tuesday, May 19. The organization will be fully functional under the new name as of the start of the new fiscal year on July 1, 2015; at that time Groundworks Collaborative will step into FY ’16 with a nearly $1 million budget. No staffing changes are planned at this time, as the organization is focused on maintaining all services currently provided by the two former organizations. However, growth is on the horizon for the new organization, which is currently finalizing its strategic plan for the next three years.
Learn the basics of solar at this free informational workshop, featuring a presentation by Kirk Shields of Green Mountain Power. Attendees will learn the advantages of solar electric systems, and about the different types of systems that are available, including community solar. Local installers will be on hand to answer questions about solar and its affordability.

Southeastern Vermont Economic Development Strategies (SeVEDS) is hosting four regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategies (CEDS) Update meetings next week.
We will update members of the community about the progress we and our partners are making implementing the Windham Region’s federally recognized (CEDS). The first meeting will be in Londonderry on Tuesday, May 26th at 4pm in the Town Office Meeting Room 100 Old School Street in South Londonderry. The second meeting will be in Wilmington on Wednesday, May 27th at 8am in the Town Hall Meeting Room. On Thursday, May 28th, we will have a meeting in Brattleboro at 8am at the Brattleboro Retreat Education Conference Room and in Bellows Falls at the Town Hall Lower Theater at 4pm.
