NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC
Paving on Western Avenue was cancelled for Friday night due to wet roads, drizzle and the possibility of heavier rain. Crews return Saturday night 8/23 starting at 7 pm.
Resurfacing on remaining town streets of Birge, Chapin, Grove, and Guilford has been rescheduled to Wednesday, August 27. This is due to the past two days of rain and the Tuesday elections in Brattleboro held off Grove Street.

The Brattleboro Selectboard will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at 5:30pm in conference room #304, third floor in the Municipal Center. It is anticipated that the Board will enter into executive session at 5:30pm to discuss the appointment or employment or evaluation of a public officer or employee.

Rep. Welch will participate in a roundtable discussion on the Support and Services At Home (SASH) program. SASH is a federally funded, integrated care pilot program that coordinates health care services for seniors with an emphasis on improving health outcomes.
I-91
Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.
Route 30
The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Spring of 2016.
Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Due to today’s rain paving on remaining streets, Birge, Chapin, Grove and Guilford Streets have been postponed until Monday, August 25. The work may go into Tuesday.
Milling and paving on Western Avenue is planned for Friday night with a rain date of Saturday night. Work begins after 6 pm with delays expected.

BURLINGTON, Vt., Aug. 18 – U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders issued the following statement today on the death of former U.S. Sen. James Jeffords:
“Jane and I join all Vermonters in sending condolences to the family of Jim Jeffords. Jim was one of the most popular elected officials in the modern history of the state – serving at the local, state and federal levels. Vermonters admired him because of his low-key and down-to-earth qualities, and because of his obvious and strong love of the state and the Vermont way of life. He was an effective champion of education, disability rights, the environment and the arts – and millions of Americans have benefited from his efforts. In 2001, he displayed enormous courage by leaving a party that, he often said, had left him because of its dramatic move to the right. Jim was a friend and he will be sorely missed.”

With characteristic decency, humility and civility, and a dogged persistence, he made his mark in Congress. Millions of children with disabilities are better off today because he lead the charge for their equal access to education. Americans are breathing cleaner air and drinking cleaner water because of his fierce advocacy for the environment and clean energy. And budding artists across the nation receive the boost of his encouragement every year thanks to his legacy as the founder of the annual Congressional Arts Competition.

NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC
Milling of three streets was completed on Thursday and clean up around structures and along curb lines is taking place as planned on Friday. Resurfacing has been pushed back to Wednesday and Thursday, August 20-21. The tentative schedule has Lane Construction starting on Cotton Mill Hill, followed by Fairground Road and Birge Street. The second day would be Chapin, Grove Street and finally on Guilford Street. This can change with rainy weather between now and then.
Too Urban?
It’s seeming that the Elm Street parking lot is quickly becoming the favorite choice for the location of the Brattleboro skatepark. It’s an odd turn of events considering this location is not supported by BASIC or the larger skateboarding community. It’s a little bit confusing because when the new Selectboard pulled the $50,000 dollar designer rug out from under BASIC and roped everyone back to the start line it was to “ensure due public process and identify the most ideal location for a skatepark.” Is the Elm street lot the best location for a skatepark?
Brattleboro’s polling place and hours will change for the Aug. 26 Primary and Nov. 4 General election. Due to budget constraints, The Board of Civil Authority has voted to hold both the August and November elections in the Selectboard Meeting Room of the Municipal Center. Polling hours have also been extended and will open at 7 a.m.
BURLINGTON, Vt., Aug. 13 – Marking Thursday’s 79th anniversary of Social Security, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called today for expanding “the most successful federal program in modern American history.”
The law creating the retirement program was signed on Aug. 14, 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Vermont has a special place in the history of Social Security. The first monthly retirement check, for $22.54, was issued in 1940 to Ida May Fuller of Ludlow. A legal secretary, Miss Fuller retired at age 65 and lived to be 100 years old. Today, there are 134,000 Vermonters on Social Security.
