NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

Milling on three streets in Brattleboro begins Thursday, August 14, starting with Fairground Road. Motorists can expect alternating one-way traffic with delays and should seek other routes if possible. When complete, crews move to Chapin Street and Grove Street to mill the road surface on each. We plan to allow traffic in one direction only from Oak Street to Linden while work is taking place. Traffic trying to enter Chapin from Linden will be directed down Linden. We will also do the same during work on Grove Street. Allowing access to Grove from Oak Street only. After the milling operation, motorist can expect a rough road surface with structures sticking up and should drive with care.


Vermont Awarded $1.7 Million for Homeless Veterans

BURLINGTON, Vt., Aug. 11 – Vermont will receive $1.68 million from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to help address veteran homelessness, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairman, announced today.

The grant to the University of Vermont is part of the VA’s Supportive Services for Veteran Families program, which is providing approximately $300 million to 301 community agencies to help low-income veterans and their families.


Windham County Economic Development Program Application Workshops Scheduled for August 19

MONTPELIER, Vt. – On July 28, the Agency of Commerce and Community Development released a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) and the application for the first round ($2 million) of the funds made available by an agreement between the State of Vermont and Entergy for the Windham County Economic Development Program.

The funds will be distributed through a competitive application process to projects that promote economic development in Windham County. Eligible applicants for the grant program include municipalities, non-profit organizations and governmental agencies. Applications from businesses will be considered for financing via the Vermont Economic Development Authority (VEDA).


Brattleboro 2014 First Installment Taxes Due

The first installment of the 2014 Real Estate and Personal Property Taxes will be due on August 15th, 2014 by 5:00 PM. Payments made after August 15th, 2014 will have an additional 1% interest added to the unpaid balance.

The utility billing is also due on August 15th, 2014 by 5:00 PM. Payments made after August 15th, 2014 will have an additional 1% interest, as well as an 8% penalty added to the unpaid balance.


Twilight on the Tavern Lawn Presents The Stockwell Brothers Sunday, August 10

Twilight Music continues its 12th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, August 10 with newgrass and contemporary folk trio The Stockwell Brothers. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 24. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, Next Stage Arts Project, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.


Sanders Reports President Obama Signs VA Bill

FORT BELVOIR, Va., Aug. 7 – U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement today after President Barack Obama signed legislation to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs:

“In a dysfunctional Congress, I’m glad we accomplished something significant for veterans. This legislation will go a long way toward ending unacceptably long waiting times for veterans to access health care and allow the VA the resources to hire the doctors, nurses and other medical staff it needs to address these problems over the long term.”


Public Invited to ‘Trail Talk’ to be held for I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Project

The PCL+FIGG Team will conduct the next on-site “trail talk” for the Public on Saturday, August 9, 2014.

These trail talks will discuss the status of the I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Project and allow the public to ask questions. The talks will originate at the West River Trail near the marina. The trail talk will be led by Caleb Linn, Project Manager for PCL (lead contractor), and Garrett Hoffman, Design Manager for FIGG (bridge designer).

Interested participants should meet the PCL+FIGG Team at the West River Trail trailhead on Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 8 a.m. and the talk will begin at 8:15 a.m. Participants will walk the trail to the I-91 bridge site, so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.

I-91 Brattleboro Bridge Replacement Project Update: Week of August 1

I-91

Northbound I-91 traffic has been relocated onto the southbound bridge. Traffic will remain reduced to one lane in each direction on I-91 until completion of the new bridge. The new bridge will be 104’ wide and is designed to carry all four lanes of traffic –two northbound and two southbound.

Route 30

The speed limit on Route 30 near the work zone has been reduced to 40 mph. This reduction will remain in effect through the Spring of 2016.

Project-related truck activity on Route 30 will continue. Route 30 will be reduced to a single lane intermittently both day and night, with flaggers regulating traffic within the work zone.

Night work on the new bridge will continue at the columns on Route 30. Night work will occur Sunday night, August 3 through Friday night, August 8.

Senate Passes Veterans Health Care Bill

WASHINGTON, July 31 – The Senate tonight approved and sent to President Barack Obama a bill to improve access to health care for veterans and reform the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Crafted by the Senate and House Veterans’ Affairs Committee chairmen – Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) – the $16.3 billion bill passed the Senate by a vote of 91-3. The House of Representatives voted 420-5 on Wednesday to approve the same measure.
