A Winter Storm – The Blizzard of 2015

It’s a bit early, and we may not get much more than a regular amount of snow here in Brattleboro, but the big weather news for New England is the blizzard of 2015.

Feel free to share weather-related tidbits here. I know we just about all have either friends and/or family somewhere in the path of this storm, and we may end up getting quite a bit here by the end of it all. Check the for all the latest forecasts, warnings, and links to many weather sites.

That’s all the storm hype you will get from me. Enjoy the snow, and stay smart and safe!

Weekend Comedy Series – Russell Brand, Messiah Complex

Russell Brand is quick witted and politically-minded. In this stage show, filmed live at Hammersmith Apollo in London, Brand looks at media, poverty, symbols, advertising, image and values.

The show starts off with some audience banter, but soon he gets down to business. Jesus, Malcolm X, Che Guevara, and Gandhi are the icons that frame his larger discussion, and it makes for quite an evening of laughs as well as provocation of thought as he discusses each one.

Selectboard Meeting Notes: Budgets, Democracy, And Future At Risk – And A New Town Manager!

Brattleboro’s new town manager, Peter Elwell, was front and center for his first official meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard. He was quiet for most of the meeting, but had a few strong words about dipping into the Unassigned Fund Balance for non-emergencies.

The future of the Committee of the Future was called into question by the director of Planning Services, a first public hearing was held on a series of proposed changes to the Town Charter, the skatepark committee has a new location to study for feasibility, and a wide array of budget matters were deferred for action at a special meeting of the Selectboard scheduled for January 29th at 5:15 pm.

Vermont Asylum Ready For Patients As 1837 Begins

On January 20, 1837 the Vermont Phoenix published the following announcement regarding the opening of a new establishment in town. Read on to see how the Brattleboro Retreat was first presented to the public.

VT. Asylum For The Insane, Open

The Trustees of the Vermont Asylum for the Insane would announce that this institution is now ready for the reception of patients. The building is finished in a manner adapted to the classification and convenience of its inmates. The two wings are so constructed as to afford pleasant and commodious rooms, and that the sexes may be entirely separated. Rooms are prepared for the sick, removed from all annoyance, where the immediate relatives and friends of the patients can if they desire, bestow their kind attentions and sympathy. Experienced nurses and attendants are procured, and none will be retained except this who are kind and faithful to their trust. – No harsh treatment will ever be for a moment allowed.

Weekend Comedy Series – Ellen DeGeneres – 1992

Almost everyone certainly knows of Ellen from her current talk show superstardom. It’s not a bad gig, but she also had a period when she was paying her dues and working her way up. That’s where we head this week.

She was breaking ground in comedy with a unique style. She’d deliver a line, then digress, and digress again. Her humor comes in waves, and she has kid-like, almost-innocent revelations about topics. Audiences get layers of jokes piled on thickly.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – January 20, 2015

Five different vendors of alcohol will ask for special event permits for a single night of samples, at the next regular Tuesday meeting of the Brattleboro Selectboard.

The board will consider a contract and loan to finish off the Black Mountain Gravity Sewer line, consider more items for inclusion on the Representative Town Meeting warning, will hear of revisions to plans for locating the skatepark, and will again offer time for the public to speak to issues of the FY16 budget before it is approved by the board.

Brattleboro’s new Town Manager may also make an appearance, being the first day on the job.

Death By A Thousand Cuts – And Carving Into Stone

A story in the . The short version: it’s worse than imagined for humans.

The studies from the Australian National University and the Stockholm Resilience Centre have some stark conclusions. They looked at what makes life on earth possible and found that we’re in the red zone for 4 out of 9 of the core componets of life.

Skatepark at Living Memorial Park Unofficially Rejected

that the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation has “unofficially rejected” the (lower) Living Memorial Park location for a possible Brattleboro skatepark.

The story says the town might still face rejection even if the Act 250 permit for the Living Memorial Park was revised and accepted and the Whetstone Brook banks were stabilized, and hints that the project has returned to the stage of evaluating other possible sites. Elm Street may also face similar state obstacles as a location, according to the story.

Weekend Comedy Series: Rodney Dangerfield

Is it the bugged-out look on his face? His nervous energy? The self-deprecation? Maybe we just don’t get the respect we deserve, and Rodney speaks for us.

Rodney Dangerfield is old-school, but hip nonetheless. Here we find him performing in 1995, reeling off nearly an hour of non-stop one-liners. Jokes about being ugly, the wife, sex, drugs, being old, and of course, getting no respect. Jokes like “My father wouldn’t take me to the zoo. He told me, “If they want you, they’ll come and get you.”

Inaugural Address Governor Peter Shumlin January 8, 2015

Here is Governor Shumlin’s address, 2015:

….

Mr. President, Mr. Speaker, members of the General Assembly, distinguished guests, and fellow Vermonters:
Thank you for the tremendous honor and opportunity to serve again as Governor. As a Vermonter who grew up, raised my daughters, and built two businesses here, it is the greatest privilege of my life to give back to the state that has given me so much. I love serving as Governor because I love Vermont.

Selectboard Meeting Notes: Much Ado About Money

Brattleboro’s municipal budget, and how to pay for it, was the focus of the first regular meeting of the selectboard in 2015. Very few decisions were made – that’s being saved for their next meeting – but issues were discussed in detail and a few Town Meeting Representatives even joined in the debate.

Property taxes appear to be going up, the 1% Local Option Sales tax may or may not be re-voted, a decision on the Futures Committee has been put off until the future, and the town has a long list of necessary improvements to do.

Board members held differing views on when the public and representatives should be consulted via votes or discussions, and which issues should be reconsidered.

Weekend Comedy Series: George Carlin, in NYC 1992

Let’s try something different in the New year, shall we? Instead of weekend concerts, we’ll do weekend comedians and see how that goes. Everyone needs a laugh, right? Plus, there are many, many funny people out there.

To kick things off, we’ll attend a show in NYC featuring George Carlin. This one has Italian subtitles, adding to the already-ample humor.

Carlin, to me, is best known for his love of language and observation of details. Some of his funniest pieces are about the way we use words, and things we do out of habit.

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – January 6, 2015

The Brattleboro Selectboard will discuss tax increases resulting from revised FY16 budget number at their first regular meeting of 2015. The increases come from the board’s recent decision to again try to get taxpayers to pay for the full Police-Fire facilities project. Money discussions will also include tapping the unassigned fund balance, necessary improvements required at the Municipal Center, and trying once again to pass a 1% local options sales tax.

The Wastewater Treatment Plant project might be completed in 2015. The board will receive an update on the project, learn more about the Windham Solid Waste Management District FY16 budget, and discuss charter change amendments that shift some deadlines, allow early ballots to be counted mechanically, and create a Futures Committee for Representative Town Meeting members.

You can participate, and bring up other items not already on the agenda during Public Participation if you so choose. Watch on BCTV, and read about it here after the meeting.

Happy Holidays 2014

I’m hoping you are getting some warmth, food, and rest in the coming days. Perhaps a present or two, too.

With holidays and such, things may slightly slower around here for the next week or so. We’ll be checking in and making sure things get posted, but we’re also going to try to enjoy some time with the family.

A big thank you to everyone who adds their thoughts, comments, news, and events to iBrattleboro. A big thanks to all our wonderful advertisers, as well. Click on their ads and ennjoy their services.

Where Does The Story End?

I was noticing how different various classic Christmas tales would be if the ending was chopped off. The carefully crafted endings to the favorite tales are crucial to us enjoying the story and coming back to it year after year.

The ending is typically where the lesson is learned, growth occurs, good overcomes evil, and so on. Not if you lob off the ending, though.

Here are some examples:

Weekend Concert Series: Frank & Bing

Seems like time to feature some Frank and Bing singing Christmas songs, in glorious “something-color.”

Classic haircuts, suits, and decorations are part of what makes this a fun holiday special that, for some reason, never made it to classic status. Maybe we can give it a boost 60 + years later.

Selectboard Meeting Notes: FY16 Budget Tossed; Taxpayers To Be Asked To Pay For Full Plan F

The Brattleboro Selectboard snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at Tuesday’s long, final regular meeting of the year. With a vote of 3-2, the board threw away their carefully-crafted and quite palatable FY16 budget that featured no cuts to services and no significant tax increase.

Instead, the split decision was to endorse going forward with all three Police and Fire facilites immediately, and to ask for a new budget that would include payments to do the full scope of work, potentially adding a significant amount to property taxes.  This sends the board back into budget meetings, and the spectre of service cuts and tax increases is now again on the horizon.

In other news,  a list of capital improvements that were to be added back in to the budget had to be sidelined, Brattleboro pays a somewhat arbitrary rate for solid waste removal, the board endorsed the use of the higher-priced bag system for PAYT, and a new union is recognized for town employees.

Sorry for the delay. I had this almost finished last night and the power went out.

Booker T. Washington’s Pencil

From today’s Phoenix, December 15, 1899:

“Before the appearance of Booker T. Washington in the Auditorium a Brattleboro girl read that he always carried a lead pencil in his right hand when delivering an address. When he came up to the stage she looked for the pencil, and there it was.

Weekend Concert Series: James Brown, April 1971, Bologna, Italy

This is a truly funky line-up, and perhaps my favorite era for James Brown. Everyone in the band was great.

We have Bobby Byrd, backing up James on vocals. We have the horn section that included Fred Wesley, Darryl Jamison, Chicken Gunnells. We have young Bootsy and Catfish Collins, Cheese Martin, and two drummers Jabo Starks and Tiger Martin.

This film isn’t great quality, but it has it all: funky suits, dances, and breaks, plus crazed Italian fans, and what seems to be Sophia Loren’s sister acting as a narrator in parts. My Italian isn’t so good, but she was talking about Sonny and Cher for a moment. If any of you can translate, please share/Cher…

Brattleboro Selectboard Agenda and Notes – December 14, 2014

The Brattleboro Selectboard will receive their first official report on possible police facility locations at their final regular meeting of the year. You can attend in person at the Municipal Center, or watch on BCTV.

If you do, you can join talk of additions to the FY16 budget in the form of capital improvements and expenses, a discussion of the Windham Solid Waste District budget, a continued debate on a motion to incorporate life cycle costs considerations for town capital projects, an update from the Pay As You Throw Committee, a request by the Stroll for a permit for their June parade, and wishing a happy retirement to a long-time children’s librarian.

All this and more. You can bring up other items not on the agenda during Public Participation.
