Modern Cuban Culture and Cuisine at Brooks Library

Author, educator and chef John Verlinden will speak in the Brooks Library Meeting Room on Wednesday, September 16 at 7:00 about his new book, To Cook is To Love:  Nuevo Cuban: Lighter, Healthier Latin Recipes.  Admission is free and the event is sponsored by the Friends of Brooks Memorial Library.

This work is a multigenerational cultural tapestry of Cuban history, life, food, wine and music.  Chef Verlinden will prepare and share “tasting samples” with the audience.

The author has received high praise for his book’s “lively exploration of Cuba’s land and culture” and his “tantalizing recipes.”  To Cook is To Love is a cultural celebration that is infused with beautiful illustrations, recipes, wine pairings, music selections and more intended to capture the reader’s palate, sense and soul.

Verlinden will talk about his travels in Cuba, its history and culture. He will share excerpts from his book that include a beautifully crafted collection of pre-revolutionary Cuban memorabilia, vintage family photographs and original illustrations.

Seating is limited to 50 in the Meeting Room.  If you plan to attend, please register in advance online at http://bit.ly/CubaatBML or call 254-5290.

The mission of the Friends of the Library is to support the Library through advocacy, public relations and
fundraising. Funds raised through concerts and other events help support the Library’s First Wednesday lecture series, technology updates, Children’s Room activities and purchase of library materials.

  • A Fabulous Evening!

I urge you all to attend this wonderful night of Cuban history and culture told lovingly through their amazing food. John is a dear friend of mine – we worked together in each other’s catering businesses for over a decade. He is a wonderful story teller and an incredible chef. His book, “To Cook is to Love” is a poignant and loving tribute to his Cuban mother in law, Aida -told through the food she cooked for her family and then taught John to cook. If you are interested in how food connects all people; all cultures; all histories then please join us on September 16th. I hear there might be empanadas as well as other delicious treats!
Space is limited so reserve yours now.

    • Mmm

Timely, too, with Cuba being considered a friendly neighbor again. I bet this does well.

      • The Perfect Time

I think so, too. I’ve wanted my friend to come and do an event for quite awhile now so once the barriers came down between the US and Cuba it seemed like a perfect time. John has been to Cuba many times on humanitarian endeavors and has a is in love with the country ( and his spouse who is from Cuba!) and all that love and respect for the culture and heritage shows through when he does these events. I hope people come out and enjoy the evening.
