Coach Globally, Act Locally: Psychosynthesis Life Coach Training Draws Students from Around the Globe

Students from four countries and three continents are engaged in a pilot life coach training program that is designed to bring about change in people’s lives, one at a time. From Australia to Poland, in Canada and the United States, students are learning the principles of psychosynthesis, a “transpersonal psychology that gives people tools to find purpose and meaning”, according to Dr. Dorothy Firman.

The second in a series of presentations about psychosynthesis life coaching courses will be held on Wednesday, May 28th from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at 73 Main Street in Brattleboro. The program is free and open to the public.

Dr. Firman is founder and director of The Synthesis Center, a non-profit organization that for 35 years has provided psychosynthesis training for counselors, social workers, medical professionals, and now, life coaches. She is also a faculty member in the graduate psychology department at Union Institute and the author of several books, including “Brace for Impact: Miracle on the Hudson” about survivors from US Airways Flight 1549.

With offices in Brattleboro and Amherst, MA, The Synthesis Center has managed to attract a global audience through its latest offering, “The Will to Grow: Transformational Life Coaching.” According to Jon Schottland, a psychotherapist and life coach based in Brattleboro, what makes this course unique is the application of psychosynthesis theory and methods in the rapidly growing field of life coaching.

“Psychosynthesis changes the whole way that people conceptualize life coaching,” Schottland said. “It’s more than helping people reach specific outcomes – it’s about responding to the call of self.”

He will be joining Dr. Firman as co-instructor in the coming months when the life coach program is rolled out in two formats: a “live” training program this summer for local residents and a teleconference training starting in the fall that will enroll students across the U.S. and internationally.

Students who complete either program are eligible for national certification as a Board Certified Coach through the Center for Credentialing & Education.

Pre-registration for this week’s event in Brattleboro is recommended due to space restrictions. Additional free evening programs will be offered June 1st and June 23rd in Amherst, MA.
