Diversity Committee Minutes July 27, 2020
Convened at 4:33PM.
Members present: Thomas Nolan, chair; Shaun Murphy, Anne Beekman, David Schoales, Tim Maciel.
Staff – Mikaela Simms, Maureen Hart, Shannon Kelly
Public/media- Kevin O’Connor.
1. The minutes of June 22 were approved.
2. Follow-up- shall we explore the possibility of offering incentives to attract staff candidates of color?
3. Bor Yang, Ex. Director of the VT HR Commission presented opportunities for policy development, education and training around implicit bias and related topics. Also does follow-up activities around race, other difficult conversations, privilege, and poverty. They offer two-hour trainings; interactive, to stimulate discussion; and follow-up activities. Bor will send descriptions, costs, availability.
4. Shaun presented the history of the BUHS mascot. Committee informally decides to think over Colonels name issue to see if anything further needs to be done, including asking students what they would like to see.
