History vs Mystery
This is a fascinating documentary, about music, life, philosophy, space, other dimensions, and more. I really enjoyed it, both the music and Sun Ra’s commentary. The story seems strange at first, but after a while, you start to get it. It was also nice to see that a chunk of the live footage was shot at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore, a venue with an apt name and a good space for Sun Ra and his Arkestra.
Arkestrations
Sun Ra, to me, is just one of those people/things that everyone needs to know about. It seems important to know that there were people like this, doing this sort of thing, thinking these sorts of thoughts.
One of the things I always liked about Sun Ra shows (for example, when he toured playing only Disney songs) was that he would begin each song by playing his keyboard, but wouldn’t tell anyone what song it was. The band would look at one another with puzzled looks, one would quickly figure it out (name that tune!), and they’d frantically search for the sheet music and start playing. It was always rather joyous.
I liked the hearing band members impressions of him throughout this film.
He’s now moved on, probably back to Saturn, but his band still plays.
Space IS the Place
I consider myself very lucky to have seen and heard Sun Ra and his Arkestra play- about half a dozen times. It was very mind and soul expanding. Ushered to a plateau of joy that was certainly unique.
I’d even say that he helped redefine my idea of what being high was all about. Beyond drugs, as high as space itself, wherever those boundaries may be.
