Reformer Down to Skeleton Crew

VtDigger reports today that most of the newsroom staff at the Brattleboro Reformer was laid off on Friday (June 26, 2015) . The Bennington Banner and Manchester Journal were also reduced to “skeleton crews” by New England Newspapers. Only Dominic Poli and Howard Weiss-Tisman remain–with no editorial staff.

    It’s a really unfortunate development. Digital First, their parent company, recently tried to sell the chain, but then decided it might be better to sell it off in pieces. This could be a first step in that direction. Or it could just be more cost-cutting. A possible next step is to publish on fewer days a week. It certainly isn’t good for morale at the paper, nor for the community to lose more of what makes the daily newspaper.

    They lost an editor a while ago, then lost the replacement editor.

      Over the last 2 decades everything about the Reformer declined. Now it looks like it’s petering out altogether. It’s just sad.
