If you’re interested in learning to decode Hebrew so you will be able to read and follow Hebrew in a prayerbook, Faith Schuster will teach a Learn to Read Hebrew class in the fall on Sunday afternoons at 4:00, beginning on September 18th at Brattleboro Area Jewish Community in West Brattleboro. There is no fee but you’ll need a textbook ($10-15). We need at least five people for the course, which will run for eight to ten weeks.
Burt Tepfer wil lead a discussion of the issues and ideas raised by the play he is directing, “Bad Jews”, on Sunday August 14 at 3:30 pm at Brattleboro Area Jewish Community – 151 Greenleaf Street in West Brattleboro. Since it is Tisha B’Av, the program will include a brief explanation of the holiday from Cantor Kate Judd, with a few words about why talking about what it means to be a “good” or “bad” Jew might be particularly appropriate on that day. Snacks will be supplied for those who are not fasting for the holiday.

I have a bunch of optical toys around, but I haven’t made any since I was a kid.
There are many ways to make a kaleidoscope. Some are quite fancy, made of metal or wood, with fine pieces of colored glass and precise mirrors. Others are quite simple, letting the user turn anything they look at into interesting patterns.
On August 25 at 6:00 p.m. ukelele enthusiasts are invited to play with others at Harmony Place in downtown Brattleboro, led by guitarist, singer-songwriter and ukelele instructor Lisa McCormick. All players are welcome regardless of level. Beginners are encouraged! Singers and listeners are welcome too. Area favorite Anon’s Thai Cuisine food cart will offer their popular fare from 5:30-7:30. This is a BYO Chair event. Harmony Place is located through the tunnel, between High Street and Elliot Street in the Harmony Parking Lot. Meet in the Brooks House Atrium in case of rain.

On Thursday, September 8 at 7PM there will be a presentation about Brattleboro’s Stephen Daye Press to be held in the Brattleboro History Center at 196 Main Street in Brattleboro. This event is open to the public and admission is free.
Founded in 1932 by John S. and Marion R. Hooper, the Stephen Daye Press (SDP) published books about New England. It is now considered the first in the field of regional publishers in the United States. Children of the SDP founders, John, Mary Ann and Steve Hooper, all formerly of Brattleboro will give the presentation about the Stephen Daye Press. In addition, there will be a display of SDP books, photos, tools of the trade, original promotional materials and other items.

The class invites women to experience playing acoustic Folk and Boomer classic songs together, in a fun easygoing group environment.
A world-renowned guitar instructor, McCormick specializes in teaching adult beginners through intermediate level students.
Women with basic functional skills on an acoustic instrument are encouraged to join. Instruments may include guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, bass, keyboards, and others. Singing is optional, and encouraged.

Twilight Music continues its 14th annual Twilight On The Tavern Lawn series of folk, world beat, rock, jazz, zydeco, Celtic, swing, blues and bluegrass summer concerts on Sunday, July 24 with Celtic world beat quartet The Gaslight Tinkers. The seven concert series continues every other Sunday through August 21. All concerts begin at 6:00 pm in downtown Putney on the Putney Tavern lawn (bring a lawn chair or blanket) or at Next Stage at 15 Kimball Hill in case of rain. The series is sponsored by the Town of Putney, Soundview Paper Company, The Putney Food Co-op, Green Mountain Well, The Stockwell Brothers and many other Putney businesses and organizations. The concerts are free to the public (donations are accepted) and food will be available.
We invite you to be a children’s face painter at the 2nd Annual Vermont JerkFest in Brattleboro. We seek experienced, friendly, and artistic people who love working with kids! The shifts run from 10 am – 1 pm, 1 pm – 4 pm, 4pm – 7pm.

Mitchell • Giddings Fine Arts is pleased to host an artist talk by the gallery’s current featured artist Jon Gregg on Saturday, July 23 at 5pm. Jon Gregg: evolving a mark will be on exhibit at both MGFA locations (183 Main Street and the new MGFA Annex at 132 Main Street in the Brooks House Atrium) through August 14th.
Jon Gregg’s work features gestural, abstract, richly textured oil paintstick on paper and canvas. Fortress-like structures and crowded spaces are central themes, even as his characters are caught mid-narrative, jostled by insistent markmaking and surface activity.
Samirah Evans and the George Kaye Quintet will make summertime living easy with a jazz concert featuring the music ofGeorge Gershwin at Historic Memorial Hall in Wilmington, Vermont. Show time is at 8:00pm on Saturday, July 30.
Vocalist Evans and bassist Kaye will be joined by Miro Sprague (piano), Michael Zsoldos (reeds), Eric Miller (trombone) and Claire Arenius (drums). The first set will consist of Gershwin’s popular jazz standards, while the second set will feature selections from the composer’s opera, “Porgy and Bess” covered in the style of the 1958 recording of the work by Miles Davis with the Gil Evans Orchestra.
The Brattleboro Area Tech networking group will meet on July 21 at 6:00 when it holds its first Business Pitch Practice Session. The meeting will be at the Marlboro Grad Center in Brattleboro..
The event will provide an informal setting where would-be entrepreneurs can present technology-oriented business ideas to a sympathetic audience. Each presenter will be given 5 minutes to make a presentation, followed by a short question and answer.
This one is specifically for technology entrepreneurs. Presenters from all stages of business development are encouraged to attend and participate, from those with only a concept to those who are out actively raising money to fund their startup.
