Monsanto Strikes Again

Yesterday in an historic move in Vermont, Governor Peter Shumlin signed the first in the nation no strings attached law requiring mandatory labeling of genetically engineered (GMO) food in the nation. This is incredible news!

But already this morning, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA), and GMA member Monsanto, announced that they plan to sue the state of Vermont to stop the bill from being implemented! Link here.

Eh Why am I not surprised?

  • As Expected

Attorney General, William Sorrell recently commented on the expectation that suit would follow. It’s really crazy to think about big business being able to force whatever they want down our throats by threats they never feel they’ll need to carry out, by creating submissive attitudes based solely on fear of the costs associated with lawsuits and outcomes. These same giants, all of them, seem to have a lot of friends in Washington.
It’s going to cost Vermont but nobody passed this legislation without knowing exactly where the next shoe was going to drop. I think Sorrell was rather pointed in saying that this is what people in Vermont want.. now let’s just pray we will prevail.

  • Tort Reform?

Interesting how the Republicans talk about “tort reform” to take away the peoples’ right to legal redress for harm done to individuals; but they never envision “tort reform” to prevent big business from using the courts punish anyone who attempts to tell the truth about their harmful products.
