West Brattleboro Association Chicken BBQ Is Saturday, May 28, 11 AM Till Gone

A Chicken BBQ will be sponsored by the West Brattleboro Association (WBA) on Saturday, May 28th, starting at 11 a.m. and lasting until it’s all gone. So plan to get to the event in front of the First
Congregational Church on Western Avenue in West Brattleboro in plenty of time to enjoy chicken and fixin’s. Desserts will also be available.

For $6 you can get half a barbecued chicken, or you can enjoy it with sides of baked beans and coleslaw for $10. The recipes used to make these goodies have a local history. The chicken barbecue sauce recipe is one used for the Guilford Fair Fireman’s BBQ for many years by Joe Jewett when he was a member of the fire department.

Joe and his helpers are the ‘grillers extraordinaire’ for this semi-annual WBA Chicken BBQ and he still makes the Firehouse BBQ Sauce! The baked beans offered with the chicken are an original Thurber (yes, the farm) recipe. Marjorie Thurber’s Home Baked Beans have been a staple on the farm for many years, and her daughter Helen Robb is carrying on the tradition. She says this recipe appeared in Great New England Recipes, a cookbook published by Yankee Magazine in 1983 when she and her mother-in-law (Bertha Robb) were featured along with other New England cooks. So you can see, this is a real down-home Chicken BBQ.

What could be better than a half chicken with delicious baked beans and coleslaw, perhaps topped off with a homemade dessert? Again, the WBA Chicken Barbecue is in front of the First Congregational Church in West
Brattleboro. So, save the date: Saturday, May 28th, 11 a.m. until all the victuals are gone!

Proceeds from the BBQ help defray the expense of the projects undertaken by the West Brattleboro Association. And, in case you have to miss the upcoming Chicken BBQ, keep your eyes out for another one on Columbus Day weekend in October.
