Hynninen will discuss how physiatry, a conservative treatment modality approaches the diagnosis and treatment of back pain, while Temmen will explore various orthopaedic approaches which include surgical and non-surgical options. Both presenters will discuss how each practice option works to alleviate back pain.

People of all ages suffer from low back pain either intermittently or chronically. There are many causes of low back pain; some are obvious such as from an injury, some are subtle and creep in over time. “People with acute back pain are afraid they need surgery. In the vast majority of cases surgery for back pain is rarely indicated. There are multiple avenues of treatment available that can alleviate the problem without surgical intervention,” says Temmen.

“Dealing with back pain is something that most of us will eventually need to face.” says Hynninen. “Fortunately there are many conservative options available for treatment.”
