Two Simple Questions

I understand that last night the DRB was to vote on opening the Harmony Lot tunnel to auto traffic again.  Does anybody know the result of that vote?

What were the final results of the “Safe and Secure” poll you did Chris?

Thanks

  • Land of the Safe, and Home of the Fearful

    Safety and Security 53%

    Freedom and Privacy 46%

I suppose these are encouraging numbers, given that if we had asked a decade ago I doubt anyone would have valued their freedom or privacy.

You can find older polls and results here, btw.

  • I read in the Reformer that

I read in the Reformer that local downtown businesses were in favor of closing the tunnel -it seems like the plans for a green space are in the works. It appears to have a lot of support- although David Gartenstein is against it stating that because it’s a park it will be unused for much of the year . But, I think it could be used for family centered winter/snow activities. People still look to do outside activities in the winter ( well.. maybe not during this PAST winter!) And certainly a beautiful green space – one that isn’t directly on a noisy street would be a nice addition to our downtown.

  • Harmony tunnel to remain as is, for now

    • Facilitate

Joe, thanks for being on top of this as you are wont to be. I wonder, if were possible, to give the approximate starting minutes of the 186 minutes of this film where the tunnel is discussed?

      • For the convenience of all

Everyone in town, not just the downtown businesses, has a stake in opening/closing the tunnel.

While I support a park in the Harmony Lot I don’t think it should be at the expense of permanently closing the tunnel which has often (for the 50 years we’ve lived here anyway) provided the best way to get from point A to point B. It also gives important access to the businesses surrounding the parking area.

And whats the stats on safety due to vehicles using the tunnel? I’d think pretty low if any.

The other thing is, if (as Davids letter to the Editor stated) the agreement to renovate the Brooks House included re-opening the tunnel upon completion of the renovations thats the way it should be.

    • a personal view, but not up to me

Seems safer to be pedestrian only. I’ve always disliked that drivers turning on to High street from Main stop immediately and block traffic while trying to make the turn into the lot, across two lanes of variable traffic and a sidewalk. I’ve been enjoying it being closed.

I could see allowing right turns into the lot from High heading into town, but we’d need a barricade to stop the folks heading up the hill from trying to get in there.

      • Harmonize

        Right turn off of High.
‘No left turn’ sign into Harmony Tunnel for uphill traffic on High
Open tunnel to include pedestrian traffic
Any attractive landscaping that adds to the above

        • harmonize and compromise :)

Good suggestion and a good way to compromise.

Does any know who the covered, blocked off “private parking” is for?

          • Brooks House?

The new covered spaces seem to be for Brooks House tenants.

(I’d still suggest some sort of barricade on High street to prevent the going-up-High-Street cars from trying to turn, if the tunnel were ever opened to the downhill traffic.)

  • Remain as is?

“Harmony tunnel to remain as is, for now.”

  • Answer to question posed

A simple question but I cannot find a clear answer in any of the comments! Every one is a bit cryptic. “To remain as is” isn’t clarification… the tunnel has been closed to traffic (and at times, pedestrians) for many moons. Does this mean it will stay closed to all, some, or none? Simple request?
