Home Depot?

Hey, does anyone know what’s going on at Home Depot? The For Lease sign is still on the building, but there are construction people Doing Things inside…

  • The Big Empty Box is Leaky

Folks at Hannaford say they are doing repairs, possibly for water damage. They hadn’t heard of anyone moving in, though.

It’s such a big space (being wasted…). Too expensive for any local business to rent, and too “remote” for any national chain to take an interest. It’s destined to remain empty, in my view, forever.

If the owners were smart, they knock it down and create a number of smaller and more attractive spaces, and start getting some rent paid to them. I fear, though, it is just a line item in a budget to them.

  • Somewhere (here?) I read that

Somewhere (here?) I read that Home Depot still owned the building and will keep paying rent on it just to keep competitors out of Brattleboro. Pretty common real estate shenanigans perhaps.

    • Early on...

Keeping others out was a big reason Home Depot took the location in the first place.

Haven’t heard of them paying rent for an empty building, but maybe. Pretty sure it is available to lease/rent/whatever. Anyone recall the name of the company that owns the plaza?

In looking at other local listings, the Sam’s building is for sale (Sam’s will sign a long term lease with buyer…), Baptist church is for sale, VABEC for sale, 79-93 Main is for sale…

      • Yes, Home Depot is still paying

Home Depot has a lot of years left on their lease, and they’ll continue to pay unless a business comes along that (1) doesn’t compete with their product line and (2) can pay as much or more than they’re currently paying. The landlord will be in no hurry to rent at a lower rate so long as they can get what they’re currently getting.

Home Depot and WalMart are both notorious for doing this all over the country.
