  One old model

  We were given an older used Radio Shack model. No instructions so I looked online and found some by typing in the name and model number.

  To set one up, you need the radio frequencies of what you want to listen to. After programming them in, you can usually choose to have it automatically scan or manually choose a channel.

  The only other thing to learn is the balance of volume/squelch. For ours, you set the volume semi-low, then turn the squelch up high until it looks on a station. You then slowly dial the squelch back down until it both picks up signals, but also releases them when done and keeps scanning.

  Scanners

  I think that the police have changed over to digital radios, so only a digital scanner will pick up their transmissions. At least that’s what I was told when I called Radio Shack and said my scanner didn’t work anymore.

    Most police departments and emergency responsers are switching over to digital; Brattleboro already did.

    digital scanners

    Has anyone bought the digital scanner? if so, which one and how do you program it?
